Reveal looks good, number of nails looks good too. They were just nailed too high and the nails blew right thru either frozen shingles or too high pressure in the gun. Shooting above the lower row leaves a gap under the top one which lets the nail blow thru.

I wouldn't jump to bashing the contractor - there may not have been one. Homeowners screw up as many or more projects as 'pros' do.

Listening to the narration, he describes it as "wind damage." I think the shingles were installed straight, they were just nailed high and the nails pulled out. The wind got under an edge and lifted big chunks and pushed them up the roof and under the shingles above them which is why it looks like such a mess. Shingles stick together once the glue has set so if an edge lifts it becomes a big sail, the more rows lift the bigger the sail and the easier for the next row to lift, it would be a domino effect.

He mentioned he was in Oakville and has an Ontario accent so I assume he is in Oakville, Ontario, which is right on Lake Ontario, they get brutal winds there.
