It's really a gamble on who you get and the results you end up with. The big thing is what happens if they mess it up??????

I hear allot of complaints about people who use Home Depot and Lowes for the installation of items they've purchased.

Thanks, Eddie, and I agree. The problem is that I don't know anyone in the business to know whether they are good or not, and the only homeowner I currently know who had vinyl siding installed used Sears and they did a beautiful job.

So I had a Sears guy out here this morning. He says they use Sears employees now instead of contractors, although the contracts still say they may use a contractor.

His prices were higher'n a cat's back, but he had all the right answers to questions, and the material samples he showed me were what I want, so I'm going to let them do part of the job; i.e., the shop building and chimney which are the only things that get wet and are likely to deteriorate with the weather. Then we'll see later about whether I want to do the rest.

Bird,
Call on these folks CraftMaster Builders They installed replacement windows at my house and my neighbors. They were good honest folks that I can recommend and they're just up the road from you.

CraftMaster Builders may be good and maybe I'll talk to them if they return my call. The website shows them to be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and here, shortly after 4 p.m., I called and got an answering service. To me, that's scary, if they're hiding behind an answering service during what's supposed to be their business hours.

They've been around a bunch of years. I think it's just the one guy that does the estimating, scheduling etc. He probably does most of his call backs in the evening hours. I don't believe they have a secretary or such. They called us back promptly and showed up when they said they would, did what they said they would and it cost what they said it would. That's a lot better then the other jokers we've tried trading our money with.

I think it's just the one guy that does the estimating, scheduling etc.

He called this morning from North Dakota where he's vacationing; visiting relatives. I thought I'd made up my mind to let Sears do a partial job, but have decided to wait until I get a couple of more estimates. The guy from CraftMaster Builders is supposed to be here Monday evening, and another local guy is supposed to be here in the morning. So we'll see how their prices, and the quality of materials, compare.

i've got a 8x8 storage building, with vinyl siding: and it has cracks and holes all over..now the donkeys do tend to rub up against the corners: but they sure didn't kick high enough to put some of the cracks and holes in there?? the building is about 15 or so years old. for the eves and such high places, maybe, any lower and you need to be really careful with the lawn mower or kids playing catch, or golf balls.

Rick, I've got ample experience with what happens to vinyl skirting used around mobile homes,:D but don't think I'll have to worry about anything hitting or damaging vinyl siding on my house until we get the next hailstorm.

I knew there were different grades, or qualities, of vinyl siding, but didn't know until the last week or so that there were so many different ones. It may change before I actually get a contract for the installation, but right now, I'm thinking I'll most likely be going with .044" or .046" Alcoa siding.

In our restoration/remodelling project we are completely rewrapping our house in vinyl. Parts of the house were battenboard, or whatever, other parts were asbestos. Only the asbestos seeems to have held up over time. Once all that was removed we were down to the original wood.

We covered that with Tyvek and then with foam greenboard. On top of that went the vinyl.

I have some serious walls now, with a superiour water resistant quality. IMHO.

If you want some pics, let me know.

Our roofs are metal.

Mike, pictures would certainly be nice, but some the questions I would have can't be answered with a picture. What brand of vinyl was used? What thickness? Which type or quality? Virgin vinyl, aluminum backed, virgin vinyl exterior side and recycled back side? Cost per square foot?
