NEW VIRUS CALLED "CALIFORNIA IBM." AND A NEW SCREENSAVER INVADER type VIRUS.
Microsoft has confirmed that this virus is stronger than the Love Letter
virus. There is no way to save the problem with this virus, which will wipe
all information from your hard disc and destroys Netscape Navigator and
Microsoft Explorer. Do not open any e-mail with this name, and send on this
warning to all your e-mail contacts. Only few are aware of this virus, so
please convey as soon as possible. Also: READ IMMEDIATELY AND PASS ON
Someone is sending out a very cute screensaver of the Budweiser frogs. If
you download it, you will lose everything! Your hard drive will crash and
someone from the Internet will get your screen name and password! DO NOT
DOWNLOAD IT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! It just went into circulation
yesterday. Please distribute this message. This is a new, very malicious
virus and not many people know about it. This information was announced
yesterday morning from Microsoft. Please share it with everyone that might
access the Internet. Once again, pass this along to EVERYONE in your address
book so that this may be stopped. AOL has said that this is a very
dangerous virus and that there is NO remedy for it at this time.

jfakerj, anytime anyone knows of a virus, I would hope the information would be passed to the rest of us; however, anytime I see one of these messages, the first thing I do is go to http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html to see what symantec says about it (since I'm running Norton Anti-Virus), and in this case they show your virus to be a hoax and ask that the message not be forwarded.

Maybe I'm naive, but whats the point of anyone sending hoaxes (hoaxii ?)

mdbarb, the first time I received an e-mail virus alert, and forwarded it to nearly everyone I knew, a nephew in Washington State who manages the computer system for one of the counties, told me about symantec's web site and I bookmarked it. I've sure gotten a lot of those hoax notices, and like you, have no idea why anyone would want to start one.
