Well guys, I've been surfing for 7 years and yesterday I got my first Virus.
I made the mistake of opening an attachment from someone I know but wasn't expecting this result.
It is a program that sends the virus via email to all in your own email list.
You can see if you have if by search for this file scam32.exe.
If its there you got it. so far I can't get rid of it by deleting it using regedit. I guess I need a virus update to rid myself of this bug.
DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS EVEN IF YOU KNOW THE PERSON.
Mine came from a friend and the message read, I am sending you this for your opinion. thanks talk to you later.

We had that all over the office the past few days...I'm sure it will come back again as people who
weren't in last week open their e mail and start the whole think over.

Problem always seems to be with Outlook/Outlook Express. I use Netscape whenever I have to use
e mail and have never had a virus problem.

We've received about 50 messages containing that virus since Tuesday. Luckily it was unable to get through the multiple lines of defense. Symantec for Exchange caught it.

Oh the necessary evil of keeping that anti-virus software updated. Think of it like preventative maintenance for your PC. I mean, you wouldn't delay changing the oil on the tractor of yours, would you?/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Yeah, I got that one, too, but Norton Anti-Virus caught it.

Funny I got an email and attachment from someone who I thought was on this board a few days ago. It said something about wanting my opinion and strangly had an attachment that ended in "doc.gif". I thought that was strange and was tempted to see what it was, but I deleted it. I don't run any antivirus software because I don't like the way it interferes with several programs I run, plus it changes your Pentium III into a Pentium II or worse performance wise. Of course those of you who my hard headedness would get viruses sent to you by my Outlook Express probably wouldn't appreciate it.

Alan, the one I got also had the attachment ending in "doc.gif", but said something about sending this for your opinion. Now I'm not sure whether it's the same one mentioned before or not. At any rate, I do keep my Norton Anti-Virus up to date, so I decided (with some reservations) to try open the attachment and that's when my Anti-Virus caught it and put a warning on the screen, so I just deleted it.

Let me preface this by saying I really don't know squat about the makeup of a virus or worm. But I have read quite a bit about how Outlook Express is particularly vulnerable to attack. I don't know if it has to do with holes in its security or the fact that it is a big target since it has so many users, but Microsoft continually comes up with upgrades to try and close some of these holes. I use OE exclusively myself even though I know it is more susceptable to attack. I'm sure there are others on this board that could explain it better.

I really should run Norton on my machine, but my experience is that I continue to get page fault errors and slowdowns when the virus scan software (I haven't tried Norton, but Mcafee and others) is activated so I end up getting rid of it, because the cure seems worse than the disease.
