A while back there was talk of some members visiting my part of Vermont. I offered my grill and thought it was all set. But then senility set in and I forgot who was coming, when they were coming, where they were staying (Smugglers' Notch?) and all the other critical stuff. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If you're coming my way -- and like dogs, cats, chickens and sheep -- please give me a heads up!

Pete

I had not planned on going out that way, but, if you want to send your retrievers out to Indiana for a visit, I am sure my two would be more than happy to visit!!

HEADS UP!! HEADS UP!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That was me, Pete. The wife and I are leaving on October 4th, and will be stomping around the Upstate New York/Vermont area beginning around the 8th or 9th. We'll be in Smuggler's Notch the entire week of October 11th through October 18th.

I was planning on "resurrecting" the other thread to see if those who had responded would still be interested in meeting someplace. Rancar was actually the one who got it all started with his thread about the Shelburne Museum.

I'll double check the dates on where we're staying. I know we're going to spend a couple days in the Lake St. George(?) area and a couple days in the Niagra Falls/Buffalo area. Other than that, the rest of the time will be in and around Smuggler's Notch/Burlington, etc.

Hey, thanks for thinking about it. It'd be great if a bunch of us could meet! I'm planning on bringing my TBN hat! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Let's hear from anyone else who might be able to participate!

Garry,
You will be driving right by my antique shop in Victor, NY if you are going down 90 to or from Buffalo to Lake George! I'm right between exits 44 and 45. (they are two close exits, only about 7 miles between them) If you are in the area stop by! If you go to my profile you can go to my web site and find how to get there. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Starting Columbus Day weekend, huh? Hope you have reservations already! Plan on making dinner reservations every night. And if you need to be someplace on time, leave early and drive cautiously. Folks are courteous on the road, just pretty well distracted by the scenery. Just go with the flow. Beer helps.

How about dinner here toward the middle of the week? Nothing fancy. Steak and grubby clothing. If you arrive during foliage it'll be a real treat. If you arrive after foliage take a walk thru the woods; it's like walking on gems with all the leaves underfoot!

You'll love it here!

Pete

Von,

Thanks! We'd love to. Visiting antiques shops is one of our favorite past times! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

We should be traveling through there on October 6th, as we have reservations in Lake George that evening. How long of a drive is it from Buffalo to your store?

I'll confirm the date and times as we get closer to our departure date.

Practice your smile - you're going to get your picture taken!! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Von - I printed out the information from your web site. Nice store!! Hope you have rooms to let. The wife's not going to want leave there!

You bet we do! We're locked in to Smuggler's Notch the entire week of the 11th - 18th. But the wife's been having going on line and getting all of these Expedia, Travleocity, Hotels.com, etc. battling each other to get us other reservations at good rates. The other night, she got us a $150.00 a night hotel for $73.00!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I think I'll keep her around for awhile! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

We do have some familiarity with the "Fall Foliage" crowds. We have the same problems in Door County on the penninsula.

Getting together one evening sounds great. But we don't want you going to any trouble for us. Why don't we just plan on meeting at one of your favorite eaterys? That way, if some others want to join in, like Rancar, JohnMiller III, or whoever, you won't get stuck with all of the work.

Lets's see how many other TBN'ers we can get involved in this little escapade and then work out the details before we leave. We don't have a laptop, so we'll have to finalize everything before we leave. If it turns out to be just us, then the others will have missed out on a lot of fun! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Looking forward to it, regardless of how it all turns out.

Thanks for the invite! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Garry,
I will have to see what day Oct. 6th. falls on. I'm closed Monday and Tuesday. But if its one of those days I might be able to meet you there. My shop is about an hour and 15min. from Buffalo. Just let me know!

Come on up... less than an hour north of Pete. Visit our cover bridges...

"Montgomery holds bragging rights as the Vermont town with the most covered bridges, boasting six inside the town limits and one on our border, the most of any town in the State, country, and, as some claim, the world. As recently as the 1940s there were thirteen in use here. Most were built by Savannah and Sheldon Jewett, from the 1860s to the 1890s."

Now you all went and done it.

Especially you VON with the reference to the Web site which the Lady of the house viewed and said "we should go there".

We are not going to but it looks like a good time. You folks should have a good time getting together. Enjoy it.

Von,

The 6th is on a Monday. Nuts! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

But maybe we can work something out anyway. Always willing to stop for a cup of coffee and see some local "color"! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Hi Derek! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Covered bridges! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I think the wife plans on seeing every covered bridge in your state while we're there! She keeps commenting on the fact that the state is small enough that you can drive from end to end in a couple of hours, so she thinks we're going to hit every corner of it while we're out there! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

But that's O.K., as long as there's a few golf courses along the way! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ever try winter golf in Vermont? Gotta use Nerf balls so they stay above the snow and ice. And snowshoes or ice cleats, depending on the weather. Wicked decent fun, especially if the dogs join us! Canine hazards, we call em! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

( Ever try winter golf in Vermont? )

I'd be willing to bet that it's about the same as winter golf in Wisconsin! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I play in a couple of winter tournaments every year. We don't use nerf balls though. We use orange golf balls. Of course, that means that we need to carry a snow shovel along with our other clubs! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

You know, it's kind of fun getting out there on a cold, crisp winter day playing in the snow! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif The only REAL problem is when you actually take the swing and hit the ball. Hitting a frozen golf ball can really hurt! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Of course, after 3 or 4 holes, we don't really care anyway, because by that time our "antifreeze" is kicking in pretty good! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I bet YooperDave would have some interesting observations on winter golf in Wisconsin!

Garry,
If you buy a Delorme VT state map they list ALL of the covered bridges in the front.

Phil,

That would be great! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Is that a map that I could buy at any book store, or will we need to wait to get one when we get out there?

I did send for all of the normal tourist information from the State Department of Tourism. Maybe I should look through that stack of stuff a little closer. The wife has reviewed it, but I haven't had a chance yet. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Montgomery has its on little map of the bridges, nothing fancy but it works. Stop by the shop if you make that far north. Maps are free /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. Depending on timing I could give a little private tour...
