Quick question....other than me....how many of you actually own one of the VW TDI vehicles in question?

I have a 2012 Passat with the DEF system. I recently road tested a 2015 Golf, which had been traded to a Mazda dealer with only 10K on it, which I found kind of suspicious... During the road test the car went into a regen and made some pretty alarming burning rubber\plastic odors. I guess some of the body work is a little too close to the exhaust and may be why it was traded. Beautiful car to drive though.

EPA just announced that they will be adding road testing to confirm manufacturers dyno testing in the future. They stated that previously they allowed the EU testing agencies to take the lead on small diesels as such engines account for less than a few percent of U.S. cars but about 50% of EU vehicles.

Apparently EPA does do road testing now but only for large truck diesels where cheating by manufacturers has been a problem before.

As more details come out, I see they already tried to fix this in Dec 2014, and again in April 2015. Both attempts failed. They can't get a clean engine and come close to the MPGs or performance they promised. Also, it's said if they even come close, they will be altering the engine tune enough that it will affect durability. So they are at a dead end. Tune the engine to comply and it goes boom, or buy back a lot of cars for recycling.
This is giving diesel engines a black eye. Lots of "I told you so" comments out there, and anyone on the fence is easily swayed back to the gas world. VW really screwed the resurgence of diesel engines. :(

Following a lot of these discussions in recent days, it has been mentioned a few times by people who seem knowledgeable that DI gas motors have a similar problem with particulate generation and NOx just like a diesel. Apparently their particulate could be in a form even more dangerous to lung tissue. Could be interesting to see how that plays out.

Following a lot of these discussions in recent days, it has been mentioned a few times by people who seem knowledgeable that DI gas motors have a similar problem with particulate generation and NOx just like a diesel. Interesting article. Sounds like there is lots of room for engineering and manufacturing improvements with direct injection gas and not so much of the seemingly dead end problem like VW is facing with small diesel.

Well, our 2010 TDI is the most capable car I've ever driven. Only thing close to was an Alfa Sud a group of us rented in Sicily while there for 3 weeks doing some work in the Augusta lube plant (largest in Europe).

Head west across Pa, and you never know those mountains are there. Whereas, the same trip in our Tacoma requires a drop in speed going up a couple of the biggest mountains and 3rd gear. The Jetta just goes up at constant speed as though the mountains aren't there. Returns 45 mpg over the mountains, otherwise 49 mpg going east or south, probably north as well.

The ONLY problem is NOx. You can fix them with Urea injection. Thought it strange that the VW 2.0 liter engines (maybe the Curze's; not sure) are the only ones in the US not using Urea injection. Could be the fix (more expensive than detuning or enrichment) but more expensive. Would require about a 5 gallon container in the trunk and a very tiny pump attuned to engine rpm and injection line to the cat converter. Wouldn't be much when new but very expensive fix to retro.

I'm pretty sure that's one of the same articles I posted in the thread that "shall not be talked about" that got locked. That shows you what's going to start happening to gas engines starting in 2017 when some of the same equipment on gassers starts to look like that of current diesels!

Regardless of how this all shakes out, anyone who fails to recognize there is an agenda in this country against diesel is either asleep or been living under a rock. When people tout how we're all going to be driving hybirds or EV's in just a few short years and then the goal falls horrifically flat (Electric Cars: Why Obama's Goal of One Million EVs by 2015 Wasn't Reached) there has to be a victim to force people into the desired behaviour. Same thing is going on with coal. Someone makes the comment "Under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket," you know things are going to get interesting.

Got something you don't like, regulate it out of existence. In the end, we will all be targets. Like a famous radio host said yesterday, "God must of messed up when he created CO2 ... He didn't know it would end up wrecking the universe".
