Uni-body? Just buy the Honda.

A phenomena I've see in auto's of the past, that were short lived.

Incredibly good fuel mileage.
Never broke down.
Broke Mach 1 top end.
Cost next to nothing to buy.
Better than anything built today.
Dropped here by aliens but snatched back before they could be copied..

If my old brain is recalling correctly, VW had a pickup in the US for a couple of years.
Little one. Back in the early 80's. I designed and sold Controllers to a company that put electric motors in them.

We owned a 81 VW diesel. It got great mileage - 50 mpg - was amazingly slow (47 hp), and worked quite well if you didn't overheat the engine, since the aluminum cylinder head would promptly warp. We added a Calloway Turbo kit to ours, which helped w/ the slow part a bit.... but 'trucklet' died when a drugged out idiot ran a red light and I t-boned the idiot in 87 or so. Fueling up once on a 900 mile trip was pretty cool. In really cold weather it would start to knock w/o the cold start knob being pulled out (which adjusted timing iirc) since the heater would pull too much heat out of the engine below 55 or so.

It is mentioned in this article, I apparently still have long term memory. 😀
Sorry to tell you this but it is the short term memory that goes first!
