"They charged my card for the $3391.00" ....HUH ???
Gold plated garage door opener?

You can't do it yourself?
I am 80, and replaced mine (from Home Depot) last year.
What is with this bashing ppl to do it themselves? Maybe he has other things he would rather do with his time.

So sorry you are upset with me.
OP was much more gracious!

First off, are you sure they actually charged you? Alot of times when I order things from H. Depot I see a hold placed on my card to make sure the credit line is there, but the actual charge does not occur until the item is shipped. They did that with new custom window coverings I ordered.
That was my question, but I couldn't find anything either way on HD's site.

Lowes did the full authorization for my generator, but the charge only showed as 'pending' until I picked it up from the store.

Burns me too paying up front. I don't earn my money that way - why should they? On a Special Order I might could see a deposit involved but not on a stock item.

Of course, MY opinion doesn't go far with suppliers, especially those with hard-to-get items.

When I used to install generator systems I never asked for 1 cent up front. Only a signed contract.

that was back when I could get a generator delivered 7 days after order was placed. Those days are long gone.
I never worried about a deposit cause if customer backed out of deal I could sell unit to someone else in a few weeks or days. Nothing about it was custom.

garage doors are custom made. So I can see a 50% deposit. I would never pay 100% up front. Never have never will.

I got the order cancelled and the receipt for credit emailed this morning. I was a little concerned since the agreement stated it couldn't be cancelled 72 hours after the inspection. Another place on the agreement says 72 hours after the initial order.

I asked several times throughout the process for a estimate on wait time and wasn't given an answer before yesterday. I think they knew the 72 hour thing wasn't going to fly in this case.

The charge shows up on my CC statement online. I should see the credit pending by tomorrow.

In the meantime I have requested quotes for repair AND replacement of the existing door. I figured if it's going to take a while I might as well get the broken spring replaced while I wait.

I could do that myself but I would have to order a spring and spend several hours doing what an experienced person could do in an hour with parts they have on hand.

Golf was booming in the 80s and 90s and then add tiger .....

With all the competition for reservations, The courses started billing you for the entire reservation when you made it.

Basically, every, 7-8 minutes another group of 4 people start their game. If it's $50 per person that means every reservation time was worth at a minimum, $200.00. Then add refreshments. At some resorts its much more than that.

Their logic was, the reservation is valuable so you bought the time for 4 people and paid 100% up front. There has always been a big problem with no shows especially when you add weather.

As a former small business owner, I never really blamed them. Golf is shrinking and I noticed, they don't bill you immediately anymore. Not at the places I play.

Pebble Beach probably gets their $ up front.

No shows are expensive, that's why you wait 30 minutes at the doc or vets. They double book appointments all the time to allow for no shows. Their time is far more valuable than yours!

I heard that same argument as I was walking out of the auto front end shop after waiting two+ hours for an alignment. Yet I have never waited that long to get in to see a doctor. (Or my vet.) Perhaps because I get there 5 minutes early and am the first one in.

We bill for tennis court reservations if not canceled within 24 hours.

Yes - no shows have a cost.

I figured I would close this out with my final decision. While prices and wait times were a bit of a variable the one constant was peoples inability to quote on a product that was exactly what I wanted. A couple of installers never even called me back. Others built in some sort of variable or just flat didn't quote what I asked for. I guess this business is booming.

One quote for a door with half the insulation value I asked for also had a disclaimer saying dents and scratches are common and to be expected on the new door.

I ended up ordering a set of springs for my old door and installing those myself. I found a video of the operation on You Tube that explained and demonstrated just how easy it was. The actual installation of the springs took less than an hour.

My old door had mismatched springs from the last person I paid to replace them. I had also not attached the opener correctly so that was on me.

I had purchased a new belt drive Genie opener to accommodate a heavier insulated door so I went ahead and installed it on my old door. I straightened the top panel as best I could and reinforced it for correct opener attachment. To my surprise the old door now opens and closes super smooth and quiet.

Maybe the world will return to normal some day and I will revisit buying a new insulated door. Something tells me I will end up installing that myself too.

Quotes to just have springs installed were $275 to $300. I paid $65 for a set of springs through HD. They even came with a pair of winding bars. The new opener was $188 before tax. Doing it myself I figure I got the opener for free and made a few bucks for my time.
