Well, it did not start out that way. In the start of the thread, I was actually kinda impressed to walk in to that store and come out with US made goods, in fact with all US goods. My "luck" in that area, with this store chain, has usually not been very good in this aspect.

Vin,

All I was trying to say is that the US economic system is very productive. We are number ~3 in GDP per capita.
This indicates that our system is pretty efficient.

And no china is not number 1 in GDP per capita; Luxembourg is, then Norway, then the US.
China is 122 out of 231.
By the way Australia is 14.

The gdp is the total value of the goods / services created, has nothing to do with debt. I agree that debt is a problem but that has more to do with our goverment and less to do with jobs and where products come from.

Why I brought it up is that even if you say all the jobs are being out sourced and the economy is going to ^&%$ then how come we are still near the very top in GDP per capita?
Sounds like to me that jobs are being lost but a lot of new ones must be created and the overall efficiency must be pretty high.

Also sometimes I hear about all the job losses and the bad economy. Unemployment is now about 5 to 6% which is pretty low in comparison to the past.

This is almost what an economist would call "natural uneployment" which means that it never really truelly goes to zero, but approaches some nominal low level.
Also it could be a lot worse:

I fully understand that if your job is the one lost this really stinks. But in most cases a new job, which may be totally different, is created. The problem is that this is painful for the people involved.

The alternative would be communism. In east germany, they still made two cycle cars even in the late 1980s! Great for the guys/ girls who know how to make two cycle car engines since they could keep what should have been there long ago defunct jobs. But this would mean the would loose their jobs, and probably need to learn a new skill. However at 25 hp, a cloud of black smoke coming from the exahust and the hassel of adding oil....... the rest of the world had long ago moved on to a far more effiecent approachs.
So is it better for a few to keep thier jobs making two cycle engines for cars or for the general public to have a modern engine.

Net exports is one of the four categories that go into calculating GDP. So, GDP certainly does have something to do with debt.

By now everyone around here should know that any discussion of "Made in America" or "Made in China" degenerates into a political discussion, the reason being of course that "Made in America" or "Made in China" is only relevant in a political context, claims to "pure economics" notwithstanding.

The no politics rule, like the no religion rule is intended to keep the board civil and non-offensive. While I do not find this thread uncivil, I do find it--and all threads like it (see "For Sale to China")--offensive. From my perspective many of the comments are blindly ideological ("the only other option is communism"), ill-informed ("a complete lack of regulation south of the border"), and sometimes downright ignorant.

The "Rural Living" forum obviously does not have to be related to tractors. However, like the "Related Topics" forum, and all the rest of the forums, it bears the no politics, religion, or offensive jokes prohibition.

The people that will settle for less will.

I tried googling the article, but I couldn't find it - it described that historically ~70% of the Nobel Prizes have gone to to Americans, and this year was no exception. Innovation, forward thinking, self-reliant - USA.

Big front page article in the Detroit News newspaper a month ago - absenteeism rates approaching 30% daily in one of the local assembly plants. What company should put up with that? The handwriting is on the wall for those unwilling to put out effort and adapt to change. Then they'll be upset when the plant is closed.

"From my perspective "

Here you are.. telling us about the rules.. and your comments are the most demeaning in the thread.

The multinational companies will find the cheapest inputs, labor, and operational cost factors.. no matter what country it is in.. they are the driving force for free trade.. making international trade even cheaper.. giving them more $.

This is basic economics.. politics cost too much $.

Political thread!!! But, I guess that's ok since it's just a bunch of Amer-I-cans complaining about them **** foreigners stealin all their jobs and sellin them all cheap crap!

To me, this is the harshest statement made in the thread. The rest seem to be more analytical in nature.

Ken,
I am not sure what to do to turn things around. It is the world economy thing. As the poorer nations incomes and standards of living come up ours will go down somewhat It is just an inevitable thing that goes along with free trade and all. Sort of like there is only so much money and if the poorer nations get ritcher then the ritcher nations get poorer. Kind of a simplistic viewpoint but it is the way I see it.

And no this is not a political thread , just economics and trade as long as no one starts blaming any party, etc.. Lets keep that angle out of it. Pleeeezzzzze. Everything going well in that aspect so far.

It's OK, I read it before it was deleted.
We all have to defer to the moderators, as well as the owners of the site. Remember, the moderators are a volunteer group, and we as members, are just a individual component of a whole great group of tractor owners. While some threads seem to take a life of their own, they are usually contained fairly well by the moderators, who I believe, are made up of a diverse bunch, politically or socialogically. It seems all views are represented here. Some may be more vocal, but that's OK. We even have perspective from other nations, which I find to be one of the most fascinating things about the internet experience.
