Wallenstein FX 8000 skidding winch questions

Well, I got the myself , the tractor and my new winch Up in the woods last weekend. I was primarily opening up a trail as there’s nothing right now. I ended up on top of the first of a series of saddles and came across a large beech that had fallen. This was at the bottom of the rise I was on , I was able to cut this into three pieces and winch it up the hill to the tractor . I’m very impressed with the pulling power, I can see how you might get in trouble if you tried the wrong move. Hopefully I can get back out there soon and get next years fire wood gathered .

Eh, better to wait for Jan/Feb while the ground is snow covered and frozen (before MUD season starts). Much easier to work felling and bucking trees then, as long as you can handle the cold. It is a good idea to mark the trees you are going to take now with spray paint as it may be obvious now but won't be so obvious come Jan, even though you think it will be...

I really hate logging on slippery ground, wading through the snow, tripping on snags...

We don't have a huge mud season either, but I use my skidding winch to lift the logs high enough so I'm not dragging the whole log through the mud, then I try to get the logs onto my log hauling running gear as soon as I can..

If I have to skid it very far, I much prefer to leave the tree as whole as I can and skid it with the small end on the ground, it's going to be cut into firewood anyway.
