Want a new laptop but do I want Windows 8?

Pat, officially, the NWS showed Denton at 31 degrees all night, but no ice around here, and it's gradually warmed to 36 this afternoon. It's just been damp and overcast all day.

I'd read the history of WordStar on Wikipedia and of course in 1986 I know it was very popular and when I used it at the FBI Academy, I liked it. But my old memory's slipping. I had my own word processor for my old TRS-80 computer and now I can't even remember the name of it.

Of course, I'm a computer "user" not a technician or expert in any shape, form, or fashion.:D But I do like to learn a little bit new now and then.

If replies to posts were opinion-free and made only by experienced experts, then this would be a very boring forum, now wouldn't it?

Personally, when I hear the word "expert", I think "idiot", either that or "weather forecaster".

The world is a gray place, anyone who claims to have exact answers for many questions posed here is usually by default, wrong.
Really? Do you really think that way? Personally I am careful not to promise more than just an opinion, but I don't pull it out of my backside because I value a reputation... I gotta think many others here on TBN feel the same way. Maybe 'experience' is the operative word rather than expert. Still I would wager that you would most always heed words (maybe not all of them) from someone who has 'done' it or been there before. I don't consider myself an expert or an idiot and surely not a weather forecaster :D. This forum seems not to have the vitriol that some forums do where people hide behind a 'username'. Someone said a short time ago that this thread has ran its course. I agree.

Do the same thing I told you to do at the office... Download and SAVE the installer; then run it.
You can wait like Bird did for a notice of it as an optional update, and do it from there, but it is the same process...
You could go to windows updates and check for updates and it may show up that way, but regardless...
you have to take action at the present time to install it.

EDIT... Be sure to do this from the windows 8 computer since the update for it is not the same as for 7.

The easiest way might be to go to the "Windows Store" in the Metro view. I think you can download the update
directly from there.

Go to the Store and it should tell you about updating to W8.1.. might take a few times.

I read this twice and I don't see where we disagree, other than pronouncing this thread as done. Maybe you're tired of it, just stop reading it.

I submit the person who has "done it" and then proclaims that that is the only way to do it, is the weather forecaster.

It would be my guess that her HP was actually made and shipped before the middle of October. I ordered mine, with Windows 8, on Oct. 14 and was told at the time we had to get it right because the order could not be changed. Sure enough, only a day later, they were showing them with 8.1. Mine shipped from the factory in China on Oct. 22. I've forgotten what date it arrived, but on Oct. 31, I downloaded and installed 8.1, a process that took 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Yep no real disagreement with you Dennis, I do hope the OP got some useful information. I guess I am just bored with this now.

Yep no real disagreement with you Dennis, I do hope the OP got some useful information. I guess I am just bored with this now.

I'm the OP on this so get un-bored because I just bought one on an early Black Friday deal. It's a Toshiba 17.3" laptop,2.4GHz Intel Core i7-4700MQ, 12 storage, Integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600, touch screen and W8, higher grade audio, 600 x 900 Native Resolution, 17.3" TruBrite LED-Backlit Touchscreen, TB 5400rpm Hard Drive, 百uperMulti DVD Burner, etc.

I got it at Costco so if I have a problem I won't have a problem. What helped sell me was the 4.5 rating ratings since most everyone was happy with it.

I read almost every post here but didn't understand some of them. Actually more than some and I'm OK with that. If this works, and I believe it will, it works. if it doesn't, it doesn't. My expected useful life for me is two years and by then we'll see what has changed and I'll go from there.

Never did I expect so many posts and so much chatter but I got what I feel will work for me and thanks to all. Since this is a subjective topic, I expect many here would have bought something different. If so, maybe don't tell me and I'll feel better. :)
