I hate govt regulations and have said for years that the whole cdl vs no-cdl needs addressed.

It's crazy someone can legally tow a 14k trailer with about any 3/4 ton or several 20+ year old duallys. But simply upgrading to a modern dually and now all of the sudden you are heald to the same standards as someone running a tractor trailer and 80k pounds? Tell me how that makes sense?

If you are running interstate, hotshoting in a 40+ foot gn hauling 3-4 cars in a 4500/5500 truck.....I get it. But the landscapers or farmers or construction guys hauling mini excavators or skid loaders on a 14k trailer with a one ton....give me a break
I feel ya buddy, after doing some truck homework if I went with a one ton I’d have to stick with a single wheel regular cab without breaking the 26k mark with a 14k trailer. Going with a crew cab I’d have to stay in the 3/4 ton mark.

Not sure what brands you are looking at but Ford will allow you to custom build a truck with a derated GVWR. I think you can do a F-350 SRW at 11,500 and a dually at 13. I don’t think GM or Ram offer similar options. They make their SRW one tons with a GVWR of 12,300 I think which is so stupid. That 300 lbs makes no significant difference in the trucks capabilities but sure opens a can of worms for those towing 14k trailers. I might be tempted to go with a 13k dually and a 14k trailer derated to 13k. Duallys tow so much more stable and safer in the event of a rear blowout.

Thanks, for posting that. If it’s something I have seen, it sure didn’t register. I’d like to read as much as you’re willing to share, comparing the two. Feel free to message me, so I don’t further derail @Jackstack76’s thread.

I don't think the OP will mind as long as we are discussing dump trailers. What are your questions?

To the OP. I had a 6'x10'x2', 10k and a 7'x14'x2, 14k bumper pull dumps. For a home owner or a seldom user they are great. Easy to hook up, maneuver better than a gooseneck and are very universal. I use mine for almost every type load. In general you want at least 10 gauge floor and 12 gauge sides. For commercial use, go with 7 gauge floor and 10 gauge sides. My PJ has 7 gauge floor and sides but it is heavy at 22k gvw. The Lamar is 7 gauge floor with 10 gauge sides, 16k gvw and weighs 1k less. The problem with a 10 gauge floor, is, heavy wheeled vehicles will bow the floor between every crossmember. (picture of my 14k dump, note the rust, that is low spots)

The longer the trailer the better they tow and load placement isn't such an issue. My 10' was dangerous, too hard to get pin weight. We have frost heaves here (whoopty doos) they can really give you a ride with a bumper pull, gooseneck takes them in stride.

For heavy use and loads, go gooseneck. Load placement is not as critical. Again, longer is better to a point. Decide if you need high volume and light weight loads or low volume heavy loads. I found I need 3' sides and short side boards to haul light weight loads such as chips or mulch. They (3' sides) are high enough to haul good loads but low enough most small loaders can reach over them.

I am also a fan of torsion axles, way better ride.

I’m not throwing shade at what you are saying, but why not just get a class A CDL and get it over with? Then he can buy practically whatever he wants.
Got mine 30 years ago and it’s one of the best things I ever did.

I’ll check it out, I’ve always been a GM guy but I’m waiting to see how the new GM 6.6 gas and fords 7.3 gas pans out. The new super duty’s are pretty slick looking. Just from past experience it always seemed the GM’s rode better than the fords and dodges As far as HD trucks go, maybe that’s changed.

Yes and no. When I was buying last year, RAM (what you call dodge) was better than Ford & GM in enough categories that I went for them. I wanted GM badly, and may go back to them. They are beautiful and impressive. Quiet, comfortable and extremely well proven drivetrains. Their rust issues were always in the back of my mind though. The 2000 and up trucks suffered horrible rust issues. My 2007 GMC Duramax 3500 was starting to rust by 2012 even though it was garaged and the underside was washed. Ford 450/550 tow ratings were well below Ram in 2020, so the decision was made for me. Ram cab is luxurious, too. Cummins engine, although not as strong built as a Ford Ecoboost 3L gas engine, still plenty for my 40,000lb and up loads. Lol
Really they are all real nice trucks. There’s not much that separates them anymore except this silly brand loyalty/warfare nonsense.

The one I’m looking to get has 20 or 24 inch sides, which is fine by me since you can add 2x12’s or whatever like you did. They also do the 7 gauge floor ect. Think I’ve made up my mind what I want just hung up between the 14 or 16K factor.

I haven’t checked out any of the new rams before, I used to work in a Dodge dealership years back and that left a bad taste in my mouth. They always seemed so cheap with crappy interiors ect. I’ve seen pics of the interiors now and they look way nicer.

I haven’t read every post, but I have a 10k, 6x12 bumper pull. I’ve maxed it out often and it pulls fine behind my 06’ K2500 HD. Much more weight then that and I would want a GN, but I like having a pappy cap.

I just picked up a used 15k tilt deck, that derated to 10001.

I plan and bid my jobs to stay below the 17001’ when DOT requirements kick in.

When I get a new truck, I may have to get a DOT #. (Commercial tractor work)
