Wanted: tiller short PTO shaft

That's a good point, adding 4" would get my overlap to about 5". Still very much on the small side, but it might get me into territory where a lower horsepower shaft might have smaller yokes and give me enough shaft. Pats are spendy though...I'd rather have the correct shaft if one is out there since I don't use the 3pt for many other implements.
5" of pto shaft overlap is more than enough for a lower hp tractor, so I'd just add what I need to get it. You can buy inner and outer shafts, and weld them on.

I always fix my own shafts that way...

Just to be sure everyone is on the same page, if you wish to weld the shaft to the yolk instead of pinning as ur picture shows that is ok. But your shaft needs (must have) that freedom of travel of the overlapping half shafts. Without that sliding feature, you risk damage to one or both of your tractor’s PTO inner workings or the gear box of the tiller.

I mentioned Pat’s quick hitch because it seems to be the most recognized of that style. I believe my were from Titan’s, and about 1/2 the cost of Pat’s, but I did loose some functions of Pat’s. But I decided I could live with that loss, one biggie is the latch system, but since I have to get off to connect the top link, I have been able to work around that.

Been many yrs. since I shortened a Yanmar tiller shaft. Fredricks gave me the wrong shaft so I cut and welded one to make it fit until the correct one was sent. Worked like a champ! Even used my Elcheapo HF. welder on it. LOL.... It was easy and only took a few Minutes. What I did since being to long even with no slip clutch attached was took out a section on the male side which was about 6" leaving a 1/4" of the shaft intact. Then I still had to shorten the Female side of the Shaft. So I took that couple inch section and welded it to the male side. Slid right on the 1/4" and made a Coupling!! Inserted and tached the male side and was done with it. Still have the shaft to the day. Which of course they sent me the correct Shaft, Which I sold with the tiller a few yrs. later.

Thanks all for your advice, this has been quite the learning experience. I was able to get a modified shaft through a kind offer from Winston and re-welded it to the original length. It fits perfectly and the tiller is making nice garden dirt once again!
