Warning for all

Forget the junk wireless stuff with a $2.00 noise maker and forget the cameras!

I'm curious if you ever came across anyone getting their wireless alarm system jammed? I replaced my mom's Interlogix System VII with a later Interlogix system, and everywhere it was practical I replaced the wireless door/window switches with wired ones. Reduces the number of batteries she needs to change as well. But mainly because you can buy portable jammers from China, and it wouldn't take much for a thief to figure out what frequency the sensors in a house are using and jam them-- but then, maybe thieves that tech-savvy don't go around doing common burgalaries?

I used to install alarm systems for 10 years when I was younger and could handle attics and crawl spaces.

A wireless system can be jammed. But your average crook isn't gonna have that tech. It's like I always said to a customer. An alarm system keeps the honest people honest ;)

I had a couple neighborhoods in my area where a wireless system wouldn't work period. Heck, your garage door opener and cell phones wouldn't work most of the time. The neighborhoods were next to some radar towers for the airport. Interference from the towers made most wireless devices do funky things.

I also lost count of how many times I said "No sir, an alarm system will notify the authorities. An alarm system will not stop someone from stealing a car and driving it through the front of your store"

I like the simplicity of hardwired systems. A few years ago I had a false alarm due to what neighbors said was a thunderstorm. It reset after 15 minutes. If you have too many false alarms people will ignore it, but a good working system crooks won't stick around with an loud alarm going off.

No, most crooks are not that sophisticated. If they were smart, there are much simpler ways of perpetrating crime.

Actually, I don't even lock my shop door, but do turn on the alarm. Why do I want my door kicked in? It has only caught the odd friend off guard.

Whether anyone does anything about a siren (or half a dozen) going off is totally immaterial. The noise level of my systems is simply beyond the point where a person can think straight.

As far as false alarms go. Ever since I went into business almost thirty years ago, I used ONLY Dual Technology Motion Detectors. Where everyone else used ten dollars straight PIRs, I used $75.00 PIR/Microwave units. I probably had a dozen false alarms in all that time, mostly from people hanging signs in retail and so forth. But, I had spent too much time at my previous alarm job going to false alarm calls, trying to figure out what might have set off the junky ten dollar PIR!

Why would anyone think the Government cares about your property when they are the biggest Criminals ripping you off daily?

I once ate lunch with a lady potential (security) customer of mine. In the distance someones sirens were going off. I asked her, if she wasn't going to do anything about it. She had been broken into quite a number of times, yet did not feel compelled to do anything.

I can tell you, however, that a high quality, old school, wired security system with a lot of sirens, inside and out, IS a way of protecting your property. Your door may be broken but that has been the extent of any loss with any of my installations. Usually a good set of skid marks as the perps left!

BTW. I spent a lot of time correcting the deficiencies of that ladies system. I think they got broken into once more, with just broken glass in a sun room, but beyond that, they have been burglary free and my customer for decades now.

There’s zero chance I’m going to go confront a criminal on someone else’s property. It’s a good way to get shot.

An old farmer who lived close to where I grew up had a great idea. To get into his barn you had to go through a door that had a couple squeaky boards. Unless you knew they were there and were real careful you would step on them. He set up the sensor for a motion light so that about the same time you stepped on one of those boards you would set off the motion sensor. He had it tied to a light not near the sensor so it gave the impression that someone heard the squeak. I've used a variation of this at my fathers house. If you walked into his back porch the motion sensor would turn on a light in his living room. It's the unexpected that scares off thieves.

Wireless has its pros as well, especially cloud wireless systems. A thief can break in and steal your wired base station and poof all your evidence is gone. A fire takes your home to the ground including your wired system. Wireless systems record your video in the cloud so a thief or arsonist can damage or steal your cameras or base station but you still have your evidence. now a days you can record both locally and cloud simultaneously.
Bottom line is-if someone wants what you got bad enough they will get it.....insurance for physical stuff and for irreplaceable memorabilia try and have it duplicated-like photos-also store them digitally.

Sorry, I don't agree with those cliches at all. I have no interest in seeing vague images of who stole my stuff. I want the criminal act halted before it starts. Sometimes I am a keyholder for people if they are not too far away. I responded to one call and got in the house to hear glass still falling out of a broken in side door.

Having entered the front door (unarmed, only criminals can carry side arms in Canada, well maybe except for security guards) , I started to get a bit scared, wondering if someone might still be there.

Anyway. With my systems, either people don't get broken into or worst case, they have a broken door. If you have a security system and your stuff still gets stolen, I would seriously rethink your security system because obviously it isn't doing its job!

Most thieves out of their first set of diapers have learned to completely ignore alarm systems.

Most P.D.'s will tell you that a home alarm call coming in gets shuffled to the very bottom of the priority list for dispatch.

Buy what makes you feel good, just don't expect it to stop anyone at all. Most of the time it won't.

Years ago thieves were crossing a creek to get behind a business near me by using a long 2x12 board. I told them I'd take care of it which is I flipped that board over, I'm middle I drilled a series of holes starting close to the edge but not all the way through. Creek below I filled with broken glass bottles, nails, etc. Then put board back so it looked ok. Next day board snapped in to, blood everywhere.
The thieving stopped, sort of like laying boards around with nails in them inside a locked barn door.
You know they're there, the perp doesn't. No liability because it's construction material laying around.
