Kubota MX5100 HST 4WD
I have a Kubota MX5100 and love the tractor. However, there are a few annoyances that I plan to address individually. I have the HST and love it except for the noise and that is something I am learning to live with and it seems to be lessening with time. Either that or I am going deaf. I made a couple of self adhesive labels on the computer with flourescent pink writing in 60 point type to help me with two problems.

1. Remember to tilt the brush guard forward before pulling the hood latch and it works great.

2. Another one just below the instrument panel that reads: BRAKE! However, I still sometimes forget until the whine from the drive lets me know what I have forgotten. I noticed that there were a couple of blank light places on the panel. I was wondering if a warning light could be installed to glow red if the brake was set. I had that on my L2900 and liked it and found it to be very useful.

Have any of you had this probably and if so, how did you address it?

When I completed my owner's survey, I suggested a brake on type light as well. I've learned to live with it, I normally put my bucket down and angle the teeth slightly when on level ground, and lower whatever implement I am carrying without using the brake (I know it's a little unsafe). On a slope I do all of the above and apply the brake. I've forgotten it was on a few times, I guess it's just a matter of getting in the habit of checking if it's on before moving...after all the old timers didn't have much in the way of fancy.

The brush guard is another habit to develop before opening the hood. I have to reach in due to my FEL, so it's just reaching in the front and reaching underneath the arms. I only forgot once, but it wasn't a big deal since I keep my hand on the hood after I pull the lever.

Some say the HST is noisy (I have a clutch), most things wear-in given some time and hours. I bought some electronic hearing protecting with a radio, I'm deaf enough as it is, the problem is some sounds you can't hear that might be beneficial to know, it's a trade-off.

Try to get in the habit of checking the brake, lowering the brush guard, etc. The labels are a good way to start. Do your routine the same way each time, and consciously note what you are doing...like gun safety.

I don't throttle up until I'm already moving and even if I'm doing dirt work with the blade or FEL, I almost always move a little first before I throttle up and start working. The few times I forgot the park brake on, the fact that the engine wasn't yet throttled up let me know because I could tell it was pulling hard.

My l3130 and now my l5740 both had a brake light and they are so unobtrusive that I still forget the brake. Both my F series front mount mowers have a lock out on the hst pedal and they work flawlessly. The only sure way I know of.
