OK, this is a rant but it might save someone from making the expensive mistake I did so please read on. I recently had a Star 50'x60' all steel building erected after much research and study. I thought I was dealing with a good company with a reputation for customer service and quality products. Not two months after the metal skin was installed, rust started appearing on the exterior vertical walls. Checkout the pictures. I immediately contacted the plant's customer service rep and he and the plant manager visited my shop to examine the rust whereby the plant manager stated to me after inspecting "if it was my building, I sure wouldn't be happy". Promises naturally were made to follow up with me about resolution and after several weeks of no contact I contacted their corporate office and requested an inspection of my building top to bottom. After several months and numerous threatening emails by me I had the great honor of meeting their esteemed district manager who upon getting out of his car says to me "you won't get any support from corporate on this". He basically pointed the finger at the contractor that erected the building even though the contractor to my knowledge does not manufacture any steel out of the back of his pickup truck. More promises of follow up were made and after several emails of "I've been really busy lately and haven't had time to write up my report", I finally get the brush off email. My contractor, Tittle Construction in Johnson City, TN will not even look at the issue which I fully expected the manufacturer to work together with them to rectify the rusted panels. I cannot express how disappointed I am with both for their total lack of a customer's concern and non-existent customer service. Heck, I don't even know why Star has a Director of Customer Service because he did absolutely nothing for me! I even sent an email to their President, David Alexander and he didn't even have the decency to respond to me. I would NOT recommend using Star for your next shop/building project no matter what the local circumstance are and I suggest you do not as well. I will be adding more buildings in the future on our farm and it WILL NOT be a Star. They do NOT stand behind their products and do NOT give a crap if you are satisfied or not. I wish they would allow me to post a letter on their "Testimonial" page of their website and tell the truth so others would not get snookered into their propaganda.:thumbdown::thumbdown::thumbdown::thumbdown:

If those are self drilling screws it looks as if it's the cuttings from the drill that started to rust. Not excusing the lack of support just what it looks like to me......Mike

I agree -- looks like the installer's issue, not the manufacturer's....

Yup, that's exactly what it is. Most of that can probably be cleaned off with something like CLR.

I agree the rust spots are from the metal shaveings , if they would have wiped the panels off after screwing it would'nt have been an issue !:(

I believe he said that rust appeared on the vertical walls. If that was the top, you might could believe it.

I would be curious if that rust appeared anywhere other than around the screw head area. Is it around all screw head areas?

The screws look beat up also, maybe used old screws.

Definately something to do with the screws, and/or how it was installed.

BTW...PARAGRAPHS...USE THEM

THE REASON THE RUST IS ON THE WALLS IS THE HOT SHARP SHAVEINGS FROM THE SELF TAPING SCREWS MELT INTO THE PAINT JUST ENOUGH TO STICK.

You wont have this problem on the roof if it is plain galv. tin , as the shaveings have nothing to stick in , and either blow away or get washed away with the first rain

I thought the screws were supposed to be on the ridges..I know they have rubber on them, BUT???

Screws on the ridges are a no no. I didn't see any rust except by the screws.
