To all:
I was alerted to this site from the "otherpower" discussion board, that someone was building or talking about modifying the original MEN waste oil burning stove. Well I not only built the original stove way back when, but also modified it as per that guy from Canada that nobody can get ahold of. I want to say that I tried his mods, and found that the thing needs cleaning periodically, and that design does not lend itself to that happening easily. Also, it is difficult to light. I have come up with a better design and since I built it around the fact that it DOES need to be cleaned, this was my first concern. I also want to say that I'm heating a 1200 sq ft shop with 10' ceilings very well. I saw a couple posts with the concern about how hot it gets, and fer sure, it does that. I wanted several things from this stove and this is what I got. It only uses electricity to power the blower ( a 15-20 year old GM heater motor found at the junk yards by the millions) to supply the fresh air to the burner. I run it off of a 12VDC power supply, but if the power fails, an old car battery works too. I even use the speed switch too. I run mine on low to get it going then turn it to medium for the long burn. I also drip the oil in, not under pressure, but taking the good ideas from MEN, wrap the 3/8 copper line around the 6" chimney.
If anyone is interested in seeing what I have, I will share my sketches with you for free. I just hope I saved someone up there in the great white north, hours of frustration of finding out the same thing I did, with a design that doesn't work as well as advertised. (no offense to that Canadian guy Bruce cause I am not knockin you) but I think my burner works better. You can reach me at
robotmakr@aol.com I am not sure if I will be coming back here often enough to be any help to anyone else...so this may be a one time post.
Good luck this winter... I'm stayin warm with crankcase oil. OH, by the way, it burns WVO just as well with this design. I have melted many pounds of aluminum with it too.
