Waste oil furnaces

That looks like it turned out really well. I too am worried about cranking out too much heat. I'm going to try the burner mods mentioned on the MEN site. Just haven't had time to get to the shop lately. Catching up on all of the last minute "before the weather turns to crap" jobs around the place. Tractor business has picked up lately as well. Hopefully that will stay going so I can get a few other things done around here.
Will let you know how the mods go when I get them finished.

Where should I look for the modified burner at the Mother's site? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

To all:
I was alerted to this site from the "otherpower" discussion board, that someone was building or talking about modifying the original MEN waste oil burning stove. Well I not only built the original stove way back when, but also modified it as per that guy from Canada that nobody can get ahold of. I want to say that I tried his mods, and found that the thing needs cleaning periodically, and that design does not lend itself to that happening easily. Also, it is difficult to light. I have come up with a better design and since I built it around the fact that it DOES need to be cleaned, this was my first concern. I also want to say that I'm heating a 1200 sq ft shop with 10' ceilings very well. I saw a couple posts with the concern about how hot it gets, and fer sure, it does that. I wanted several things from this stove and this is what I got. It only uses electricity to power the blower ( a 15-20 year old GM heater motor found at the junk yards by the millions) to supply the fresh air to the burner. I run it off of a 12VDC power supply, but if the power fails, an old car battery works too. I even use the speed switch too. I run mine on low to get it going then turn it to medium for the long burn. I also drip the oil in, not under pressure, but taking the good ideas from MEN, wrap the 3/8 copper line around the 6" chimney.
If anyone is interested in seeing what I have, I will share my sketches with you for free. I just hope I saved someone up there in the great white north, hours of frustration of finding out the same thing I did, with a design that doesn't work as well as advertised. (no offense to that Canadian guy Bruce cause I am not knockin you) but I think my burner works better. You can reach me at robotmakr@aol.com I am not sure if I will be coming back here often enough to be any help to anyone else...so this may be a one time post.
Good luck this winter... I'm stayin warm with crankcase oil. OH, by the way, it burns WVO just as well with this design. I have melted many pounds of aluminum with it too.

Not much action on this subject, thought I would keep everyone informed on my waste oil burner. I have been burning every weekend this winter. Use about 3/4 gallon per hour. Keeping shop 70 degrees plus with no problems. My burner is starting to show replacement time is near. The fan has been a major improvement and has done little in modifications to the stove/burner. I have burned all types of waste oil, engine oil, gear lube, transmission oil, both regular and synthetic. I clean the burner each day and just light it and off it goes until shut down. Usually burn for about six hours at a time.

Thanks for the update. I've located an older but very unused wood stove and will be converting it soon. Still looking for the best burner assembly, so your updates are extremely valuable! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

great to hear your burner/blower combo is working. I have gotten enough shop time in to build the burner but haven't gotten a chance to build the inlet/blower pipe yet since it's about 10 degrees in my shop and I don't want to shut down long enough to tear my stove apart.
Will post pics as soon as I get the new burner design mounted.
