A friend of mine took his Ford Ranger pickup for service to a Jiffy Lube. A couple of days later his transmission (manual) basically disentegrated inside. They supposedly had changed the transmission fluid. When they pulled the tranny it did not have a drop of fluid. I bet they drained it and never refilled it.

I don't trust those guys down it that pit where you can't see what they are doing.

And more quick lube bs

Lady I know had here oil changed at local QS/Penz store. A few days later here front axle on her 2003 Envoy started making a lot of noise so she made appnt at the GMC dealer. They found her front axle shot and no lube inside. Not a trace of a leak and there was nealy 75,000 miles on the 4x4 SUV. Someone at the QL place must have thought he was draining the oil or whatever. No other explanation.

Also a lady friend of my mothers lost the engine in here new Lumina some years back when they forget to put oil in the engine. She got 7 miles before it stopped. She called a wrecker and they towed it to the Chevy dealer. The next day they called and told he there was no oil in the engine. The QL place paid for a new engine at the GM dealer, cost nearly $5g.

I had a college kid working for me a few summers who also worked at a QL during school and had many stories to tell about the dumb things that went on. If you could walk and chew gum you were qualified to work there.

Okay, now I feel tempted to tell my story.

I drive a company owned fleet vehicle and we can only go to authorized oil change service places. Of course, they have some of the cheapest listed. I took it to a Goodyear service center and had the oil changed, and a minor tune-up. I get the vehicle back, go one mile and the engine is miss firing, and the idiot lights are going crazy. I take it back in, and they forgot to put one of the spark plug wires back on. Okay, no problem, and back on my way engine running fine. About a week later, I am in the hills of Clermont, FL and notice the transmission is having a hard time. These are not big hills... This time I take it to a GM service shop. After a day in the shop, they tell me they found water and rust in my transmission case. I need a new transmission. I think to myself... How did water get in my transmission? To this day, I still blame the oil change people. I don't know what they did, but it was a coincidence!

Yep that too. Hard to find either preachers or lawyers that are mechanically inclined.

Joe:

Maybe water and rust got into the transmission through the radiator heat exchanger. Any oil in the radiator?

Exactly why I do my own!!!

They dont pay those guys much above minumum, that shouldnt be a factor in getting good and dependable service, but guess what, it is /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

well theres a few different ways water can get into a tranny, most common ways are a missing vent cap, bad seal around the dipstick tube where it goes in the tranny, or most of all the cooler in the radiator springs a leak.

Can't even trust the dealer. My GM dealer has a "free oil change" policy. I usually do it myself, but had the truck in for something else, and they agreed to change it with MY oil (Mobil1) and MY filter (Mobil1). When I went to change again last weekend, I wasn't really surprised to find a crappy Penzoil filter on it. I imagine it also had $0.50/quart oil in it too, and some mechanic stole my Mobil1.

Wow, we must have a good Jiffy Lube. I don't have time or want to deal with the cars (tractor is a different story). The wife keeps track of mileage and runs the cars into a local jiffy lube. Once in a while she will buy a filter or wipers but the guys at the JL know not to try to sell her if it isn't needed.

My Dodge caravan has aprox 220,000 on the clock and still going strong. Engine and transmission have been serviced by the same Jiffy Lube since I bought it at 25,000 miles. I have no idea if they use the right oil or if the drain plug gasket is missing and don't care. I get in, it starts and no warning lights, that's good enough for me. I did have to get the transmission rebuilt at 205,000 but from what I understand about Caravans that's about 100,000 farther than most get on a transmission. The wife also has a Caravan, same deal, hers has around 160,000 on the clock and so far so good.

We have just not had a problem...
