Got I hope not to dumb of a question for those in the know. Does water stay separated from fuel in the filter with the engine running? Does the fresh flow of fuel from the lift pump stir it up like shaking your salad dressing?

It will build up in the tank then flow to the filter and eventually make it to the engine. During downtime it will freeze in the line and or filter blocking fuel flow. It will make the engine stall or run rough.
In oil it will mix and look milky. Will separate back out.

Water should be caught by the filter up to a point where the filter can hold no more water. If there is water present, change the filter and locate the source, the onboard tank or your supply.
You don't want water getting to the engine, obviously.

Guys thanks for your reply's . I'm having an issue with fuel lines freezing up on a SSL. Drained the tank, replaced the filter.Still freezes up. primer bulb goes crunch when you squeeze it.Only thing I can think of is I'm not completly emptying the tank. This unit has no drain plug. I emptied the tank via the fuel line to the pump.:confused3:

Get 911 in there pronto! Good stuff and it works! It somehow absorbs the water. STP makes a similar product almost identical in packaging. Strange!

Apparently water going to your injectors turns to steam and can blow pieces off of your injector. So I have read, although hard to believe.

On direct injected engines water does destroy the injector tips. On the indirect injected I am not sure if it would damage the injectors or not.

Agree he needs to get some fuel conditioner in the system.

Water is hard on the injectors, and it will ruin the tips.

Water has very little lubricating value, to almost none in a deisel system. So its not lubricating the pump or injectors when it goes through.

The filter is designed to catch the water. it will catch it till it becomes to full and it makes its way into the injector lines. So change it or drain the filter if it has a drain on it. Normally you should not get much water in the filter in the course of running in bwtween filter changes.

Put the Bobcat treatment in when I drained the tank. It pretty much did nothing. Where do I find this 911 stuff??

Power Service 911 in the red bottle. Any ranch type store will have it as will most auto parts stores. Red bottle is for emergency use. White is for normal fuel maintenance & to prevent diesel gelling.

Thanks, Found it at my auto parts supplier. Will post results.

Personally, I would drain the system, put the fuel in a container and let it sit so the water separates. Then, check to see that the tank is clean, change the filter. I would siphon and filter the good fuel off the top layer of the fuel in the can and dump the lower dirty layer with the water.

OK guys, I drained the tank again. this time I removed the filler hose and used a siphon hose to drain. Did get some water out. 911 is in and all I need now is some good cold weather!

Are you sure you are not adding water with your fuel each time you refill?

It is wise to use a Mr. Funnel when you fill to remove all water and contaminates as you fill up, especially if filling from fuel cans. A proper filter should be separating any traces of water that condense in the fuel tank. This goes for diesel or gas. I keep a Mr. Funnel close by for all my fueling I do from stored containers and drums.

It's not a problem here at the store. My tank is treated and has a filter with water separator. The problem is since the unit in question is a rental unit not all the fuel comes from our shop. Some customers will fill it up them self to avoid a fuel charge. I'm pretty sure this is how the problem got started.

As I recall the molecular size of oil and water are such that the fuel filter filtering element pores are too small to allow the water molecule to pass. It therefore remains in the filter and on some pumps, like inline (as I recall)......Simms?????? they have two fuel filters, one to catch and trap the water and a second to ensure the first was successful. I have 2 on my 3000
Ford, but it has a CAV distributor pump.....course Ford initially came out with only the Simms on this tractor so I guess they just left the two in the design on CAV equipped tractors. My 2000 is an older design of the original Ford 4 cyl OHV engine and it only has one with a Roosa Master pump.

The filters have drain screws on the bottom for draining out the water in addition to the fill screws on top for filling the cavity back when the filter is changed. Haven't been into my 6530 as I bought it new and keep the fuel clean so I'd have to look up servicing procedures on that. One other thing is that I use the water absorbing filter elements on my Gold fuel filter from my diesel supply tanks. Between that and PS snake oil, I just don't have fuel related problems.
