Stopped at a gas station to buy gas and dip.... On my way from the pump to the store I walked my the most interesting vehicle, a beat up 90's era Dodge Dakota. It had Bald (may pop) tires and did not have a straight body panel on it.

However in the bed; was a unique stainless steel box with a PVC pipe sticking out both ends. One end had a big K&N cylindrical filter and plumbed out the other side of the box was a pipe that led from the bed to the hood. I thought, "what the heck is that"? I typically do not look in other peoples vehicles but it did not fit the personality of an old beat up farm truck. It didn't end there, up front there was a row of Mason jars filled with what looked to be water and wire that was spun like a resistor with terminals that connected each mason jar lid in parallel. Tubes were plumbed through the lids and connected in series to a tube that led under the hood. I was intrigued and curious at the "science project that stood before me".

Finally walking into the store to pay for my fuel and purchase my much needed chew of tobacco I couldn't help but wonder at what I had just seen. As the day progressed I became determined to find out what it was that I saw; I still had the better part of the day stuck at work- without any resource to research what I was and it was grueling.

Well I am home and now know that you can make a hydrogen powered anything out of a mason jar/some wire/water. I will be doing this, as I had no idea that a beat up truck that look like a distillery was running on water. Blew my mind!!!

Anyone else out there seen anything like this before?

One of my cars always ran noticeably better on foggy days. I bet that is all that is happening here. Just a little water vapor added to the air.

Water sounds like an ideal fuel, but it takes too much energy to break it apart.

Its been discussed here in the past. You need some power source to run an electrical current through the water to strip the hydrogen out of it. If you were going to try and use that as your only fuel source, you'd spend more money making electricity to get the current to strip the hydrogen to power a truck-sized vehicle than its worth. Way much more money.

One the other hand, if you were just going to use your alternator to supply current to strip SOME hydrogen out of some water to act as a fuel additive to the air supply to increase the efficiency of the air/gas burn, that's and interesting subject and you can find a lot of info on the web about hydrogen electrolysis generators.

This subject always stirs up passionate debate, so be prepared to be called a pipe-dreaming moron by the time its over, not that I'm calling you that, of course. :)

I did hydrogen experiments in grade school and made quite a good fireball, by the way. :D

If it was only that easy.

Anyone remember water injection systems ?

Isn't that called a steam engine?

Wish there were a photo of that vehicle.

I had a friend that had water injection on a high powered boat engine to reduce knocking. Nothing about hydrogen generation, though.

The only place on the planet that is gearing up to make hydrogen gas by splitting up water molecules is the country of Iceland in conjunction with Shell Oil Co. The reason they can do this is they have a inexhaustible amount of steam heat from volcanic activity near the Earth's surface for free and can generate electricity for hydrogen electrolysis generators . Otherwise the energy to break up water, at this time, costs more than the end product. Whom ever owns that truck gets great laughs all the time fooling folks who are gullible.
