Water For Fuel??????????

The only place on the planet that is gearing up to make hydrogen gas by splitting up water molecules is the country of Iceland in conjunction with Shell Oil Co. The reason they can do this is they have a inexhaustible amount of steam heat from volcanic activity near the Earth's surface for free and can generate electricity for hydrogen electrolysis generators . Otherwise the energy to break up water, at this time, costs more than the end product. Whom ever owns that truck gets great laughs all the time fooling folks who are gullible.

Not only that, it takes more energy to free hydrogen from water than is produced in the combustion of hydrogen. It's simple thermodynamics.

The interest in producing H*2 is it's portability and it's use in the extremely efficient fuel cell generators

I never did get to speak with the owner of that Durango. I did; Google (mason jar - electrode - water) and it led me to HHO. I then typed in HHO CAR into Google and it has ton's of info.....I personally have no idea how to do it, but just a basic knowledge or understanding of flammable liquids and gases - specifically Methane

Still, it seems that no one here has seen this in real life. I cannot speculate on if this works or not as I have just started researching/googling this.

Perhaps this was someone's attempt to give it a shot and see for themselves, but it looks to be a semi-costly experiment absorbing several hundred dollars and lots of man hours.

I appreciate the feedback (both positive and negative). There will always be that adage "there is always more than one way to skin a cat". I am still fascinated as I have never heard or seen anything like this before

regards

The theory of electrical hydrolysis to split water was written about in the 1890's and was actually experimented with the 1920's. It is nothing new just like the interest in electric cars. My neighbor owns a 1909 Baker Electric that I helped him rebuild.

Never seen one of those (electric car) before. Every prius that I pulled up beside at a stoplight- its little engine would crank and run when the light turned green. I have seen a golf cart that was electric, but never a real car. I guess those who own them must live in the big city or located close to town. I need to get out more...... As I surf the web, I am finding out that HHO might just be a pipe dream. I wonder though, why would someone go to such great lengths to add all that stuff to their car?

One of my cars always ran noticeably better on foggy days. I bet that is all that is happening here. Just a little water vapor added to the air.

Water sounds like an ideal fuel, but it takes too much energy to break it apart.

Anyone remember water injection systems ?

I had a friend that had water injection on a high powered boat engine to reduce knocking. Nothing about hydrogen generation, though.

I had a '68 vintage 140 series Volvo in the late 70's. It had a 10.5:1 compression ratio, which was great, as long as premium gas was available, but it got scarce during the second energy crisis (1979). I was able to get a slightly thicker head gasket that lowered the compression ratio to 9.5, but still too high to run well on 87 octane, which was all I could get. At the time, Edelbrock made a water injection kit for muscle cars and it worked great. The car ran smooth, as if it was a rainy day, as bcp mentioned. A little dri-gas/methanol to keep the water from freezing in the winter seemed to help.

Are you sure it wasn't a mini still and he was making moonshine! :)

On the wind generator threads there is a lot of talk of the problems with many renewable resources. One of those problems is the power plants needing to throttle down and up to compensate for fluctuations in the grid because wind generators' instability. This causes power plants to run at less efficient levels (because I presume power plants are most efficient near full output).

I wonder if separating hydrogen would be an efficient use of excess electricity to keep the plants running at a higher efficiency. It seems running them at less than optimum efficiency is throwing away energy anyway. You would think there would be a break-even point where a power plant could increase their output to separate hydrogen and keep them running at more efficient levels.

I would also presume that the hydrogen process is easy to modulate to react to supply/demand?
