Water Heater Timer

/ Water Heater Timer #21
I got one I put in about 10 years ago, its all mechanical and you can move the pins/stops to ajust the start stop times,it came with 4 stops. this allows it to run 2 times a day. Its easy to ajust for your shifts of activity. I installed it myself and also put blanket wrap around the water heater. I also put one on my porch lamps with a reostat. If you have ever done any 12/2 wiring its an easy install, just be sure to shut off the breaker as 220 can be lethal. It included a wiring diagram inside on the cover and written instruction with the unit, when I got mine it was around 30.00 at a local shop. It has a manual bypass with a switch of the lever, and you can buy additional stops.

I have one, it is in an upstairs closet by the kitchen, and the water heater is downstairs under the stairwell.. I cannot say if it saves or not, as it was in the house when we bought it 10 years ago. It does not have a weekend setting so when you want to take showers you will probably need to hit the override button unless it is already lit (on). It is on in the morning, and shuts off most of the day, and turns on in the evening, then off by 2200 hrs. I have gotten used to checking the button before taking a shower on the weekends. Not much problem, but does it do any good? I don't know.

here in our part of Ontario, they put us on time-of-use billing last August.
Shortly after, I put a timer (Intermatic 8015C) on my water heater (75USgal)
I just got my latest elec bill, it shows 69% of my usage was during off-peak hours. This sounds impressive, until you realize they charge you time-of-use rates only on the actual power used... Then they add on things like delivery charge, regulatory charge, debt retirement charge, and finally sales tax. So of the total bill, only 59% of it is affected by actual time-of-use.
None-the-less, I figure I'm saving about $10 each month by running the water heater only during off-peak hours. Won't take long to pay off the timer, then we're saving big money, and we don't notice any shortage of hot water.
