Water Hose/Garden Hose Repair

I've found it's better to spend a few dollars more on the initial investment. Well over a decade ago I found some lengths of Sears Craftsman rubber hose on sale; have used them since with excellent results and zero problems. Guaranteed for life (if Sears survives). Of course, if you run over the end with the truck....

I use the Craftsman rubber hoses toosame result. When we damage one I usually cut it at damage and make 2 hoses. We can find a place for most any length hose on the farm. ... For repairing 5/8" hose check out the Brass end fittings at TSC. The 3/4" and some spit works very well for 5/8 hose. [3/4"] from other suppliers are too big. - - $2.99 per end. Clamp included. If you ever throw the hose away keep the ends - they dont wear out.

Perhaps that is the problem: too cheap of hose? Better hose might not need all the repairs.

What hose would you recommend as the best? Many of my hoses kink like crazy.

We use hundreds on feet of hose around the farm. Nothing has given us as good a service as the Craftsman rubber hose.

All the hoses I buy are guaranteed for life. All you have to do is cut off the ends and mail them back for a replacement. However, after a year or two, when they break, it is always impossible to find the receipt and return information even if I have it filed away because I have many different hoses and who can remember which hose goes with which receipt.

I buy hoses that don't kink and that are supposed to not get stiff in cold weather but after a year I find all of them stiff and hard to maneuver.

One fact of life: The more expensive the hose, the quicker someone will drive over the end or find its way into your bush hog..

The last hoses I bought were made by Gates. It is good quality rubber hose and does not kink. I've had mine going on ten years or so and have only had to replace end fittings which I ran over by accident and flattened.

I agree. I've used a lot of cheap garden hoses over the years, and I've done a lot of hose repairs. I'd probably never use the plastic repair parts, or plastic quick couplers, again; just don't last long enough. But in July, 2012, I bought some Gilmour Flexogen hoses; 8 ply with brass couplings, and a lifetime warranty. They claim to be "The Last Hose You'll Ever Buy".

The only drawback is that they're thick and heavy, but I have them on hose reels and they work well for me. And of course it remains to be seen how long they'll last.

One thing I need to find is a water hose that can handle higher pressure -- our pier is about 35 feet lower than my well tank, so water pressure gains another 15psi down at the pier. The hose I was using down there during construction swelled to about twice its normal diameter. Had no issues with the connections on the ends, but it did not look good with the hose bulging out around the brass fittings. I am sure it would have burst if used longer.

What is the pressure? We run Craftsman rubber hoses at 80psi continuous .... and up to 95psi sometimes. No problem over years of use -- hot or cold.

That's another reason I bought the more expensive hoses. They show to be "Over 500 psi burst strength" and I was surprised long ago to find our city water pressure running 90-100 psi all the time.
