Water Line Help for 1500' run from Spring to Homestead

Water Pressure at the house is only about 35 psi

Don't know the pressure to the tank on the hill and will need to investigate.

He picked up a 250 coil of 1" L copper with sleeve to run around the yard this morning...

The poly at those stores is junk. It gives the good poly a bad name.

For residential service in town I have replaced a lot of old galvanized from meter to house with 3/4 and 1" type L coiled copper...

Even did one with K because it was left over from a job...

When I started to price it out for 1500 feet it got expensive real quick...

When my contractor ran my water line (about 2500ft), I told him I thought I needed black poly, mostly because there would be few joints to cause trouble later. He recommended 20ft sticks of PVC with rubber o-ring joints for several reasons: 1) He ran water lines for the county, so he had a lot of it on hand that was bought at very cheap bulk rates. He put in the smallest he had (2") for which he charged me about 1/2 what 1" black poly would have cost, 2) He said that in his experience the slight slippage that the o-ring joints would allow made the whole line hold up better/longer over time. He said that most water line "movement" comes from changes in pressure. It is very slight, but can cause problems.

It was an added benefit using the 2" line that I now have a pretty significant amount of water storage in the line in case of outages. Something like 600-700 cubic ft. Plus plentiful flow.

One other thing we did that you might want to consider; we put in a tee/branch about every 300-400ft terminated with an inexpensive frost-proof yard hydrant. Now we have some water sources for a bit of fire mitigation or if one needs a cool drink while out working.

Ultra yes there are different types of black poly, I might be wrong but I think the stuff you want has a green line on it. That's what is used up here. My water line has the white plastic barbbed couplers, use a torch and heat it slightly and those clamps work down nice and snug.

Around here in the frost area they use 300 # rated poly. May be the same as SDR 11 rating. Not sure what length rolls are available.

The markings are all different based on manufacturers. The SDR rating is standardized though. Fused bonded poly is stronger than the pipe itself. Really there is no comparison to O ring fittings, shark bites, stab, barbs, pvc etc. If you use the right SDR and fuse it properly you will not have issues. For small lines I will take a role of 1,000 foot poly over a pvc joint every 20 feet any day of the week.

For hydrants, spend the extra and get a Merrill hydrant.

They're just made a lot better and operate smooth as silk. I used some cheaper brand from TSC a few years ago and my dad used some Orschelins. Guess what, all 6 have had to be replaced with Merrills.
