Well yes, but you have to use the cow as a 'money laundering' scheme to satisfy other parties. You put the money 'through' the cow and into the tractor. Somehow, that sounds like b--- s---. :D

Actually it sounds like Government. ;)

What about ajoining corrals, meeting at the water. Then the patties would be in one corral and the biscuits in the other.

The oldtimers around here told me long ago that one cow can drink 30 gallons of water a day. Good luck with your project and the two cows, but please don't get those critters until you've got an adequate and sure water supply for them.

Buck, I hear those old salt cedars in ya'lls state will drink the same out of the ground. I guess this year even they have suffered some, huh?

BTW, Dave, I like the "money laundering" scheme for tractor projects!:D

I've always thought this to be a good idea. I've seen some larger pastures here in Oklahoma where they'll put the watering tank in the fence line that separates two pastures. Of course it was supplied by a well and a wind mill.

Most of my livestock projects have not been money makers. Yet we continue to try out of love of the lifestye. It helps to have a couple of other jobs to support my farm habbits.

As far a hauling water, down here we can get those 75 gal poly tanks in a wire crate. One will fit in a back of a pickup or 2-3 on a trailer. Be sure to calculate the full weight of the water so not to overload the trailer.

My brother in law has a 300 gallon plastic tank that slides in the back of a pickup. He goes to the water tower in town which is about 3 miles to fill it. Takes about five quarters to fill it up. When the tank is empty one guy can easily slide it in and out of the truck. I have one like it to nurse my small 3pt sprayer with.

My brother in law hauls water to his cattle and uses a solar heater to keep the water from freezing in the winter.

Do you have any information on a solar heater? I have never heard of one.

Gary at builditsolar.com has one he is working on.

I think it would be hard to get something that worked in a pasture, half to keep the cows off it. But, you can use a solar water heater with a solar driven DC circulation pump - it runs when the sun shines.

The hard part would be to have it not freeze up, and I don't know that I would be putting something with anti-freeze in a pasture.

That forces you into a drain down system probably, but drain to where? Maybe just let it out on the ground and start fresh the next morning. Cows probably go overnite with needing water in the winter?

Just thinking ...

Dave.

Open water wells are a source of pollution because animals fall in.. not cool, also many are ill prepared to keep surface runoff from draining into the well, a definite source of contamination..

I am thinking about buying a beef cow or two. I have everything I need except water. No water or no electric close to where the cows could be. The thought of hauling water and dumping the water trough every day in freezing weather is holding me back. I am not wanting to dig a pond. Have I optioned myself out? We have horses and automatic water for them. But we don't want the cows running with the horses. Road apples much easier to clean up than cow patties.

What did you finally decide?
