Wavin\' in the wind

Since we have so many Harley fans here and only a few of us Wing Nuts ... I thought you might get a chuckle out of this Top 10 List:

Top Ten Reasons Why Harley Riders Don't Wave Back
10. Afraid it will invalidate warranty.
9. Leather and studs make it too hard to raise arm.
8. Refuses to wave to anyone whose bike is already paid for.
7. Afraid to let go of handlebars because they might vibrate off.
6. Rushing wind would blow scabs off the new tattoos.
5. Angry because just took out second mortgage to pay luxury tax on new Harley.
4. Just discovered the fine print in owner's manual and realized H-D is partially owned by those rice-burner manufacturers.
3. Can't tell if other riders are waving or just reaching to cover their ears like everyone else.
2. Remembers the last time a Harley rider waved back, he impaled his hand on spiked helmet.
1. They're jealous that after spending $30,000, they still don't own a Gold Wing.

But to be totally fair, sometimes GoldWing riders don't wave back either.

Again, to facilitate understanding....
Top Ten Reasons Why Gold Wing Riders Don't Wave Back
10. Wasn't sure whether other rider was waving or making an obscene gesture.
9. Afraid might get frostbite if hand is removed from heated grip.
8. Has arthritis and the past 400 miles have made it difficult to raise arm.
7. Reflection from etched windshield momentarily blinded him.
6. The expresso machine just finished.
5. Was actually asleep when other rider waved.
4. Was in a three-way conference call with stock broker and accessories dealer.
3. Was distracted by odd shaped blip on radar screen.
2. Was simultaneously adjusting the air suspension, seat height, programmable CD player, seat temperature and satellite navigation system.
1. Couldn't find the "auto wave back" button on dashboard.

Re: Wavin\' in the wind

My free hand is generally holding the now "loose" parts that have vibrated off my old rigid framer. And loud exhausts mask the clank of the nuts and bolts hitting the pavement...it does give ya added bonus' too... a treasure hunt when ya get home, look for the missing parts, and delight when expensive chrome dodads are still attached. Same with the oil. It's a designed "total loss" system, that way it's always fresh. Harley is why God made Duct tape and bailing wire.

too funny, Rocky2!
And here I always thought the loud noise was to keep us Wingers from riding too close behind ya!

Re: Wavin\' in the wind

Wingnut,
I am not a motorcyclist of any sort but I found your posting amusing. Here in New England Harley's are King. They revere them. I lived for awhile in Lancaster County PA not to far from the HD factory in York. Even in that hallowed location the HD was not worshipped as it is here in NE.

I get a kick out of the HD riders in full leathers ala Marlon Brando. Chaps, jacket, boots and the little leather fishermans cap. Plus the middle aged gut hanging over the belt. I work with some folks like this. When I questioned them on their attempts to look "Cool" and/or like a rebel I get a 10 minute discourse about how the leather get up is required for safety reasons in case you crash it will prevent road rash, blah, blah, etc. Then I point out that if they were really concerned about safety they would put a helmet on that fool pumkin head of theirs instead of a bandana or the fishermans cap. That leaves them speechless - they can't admit that the leather really is just a fantasy ego thing.

Here's a link to our local NH paper. <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.theunionleader.com/articles_show.html?article=11598>http://www.theunionleader.com/articles_show.html?article=11598</A> It is about buying a HD. Front page news no less!!! My favorite part is were a clerk tells the reporter that a $500 leather HD jacket is an "investment". Or how the reporter is now a member of some mystical special club. All because she brought the "right" friggin motorcycle.

Okay now all the HD folks can have at me :)

Re: Wavin\' in the wind

Uhmmmm, Phil ... I wasn't trying to start a religous war at all here ... I happen to think that, as with cars, there's a model for everyone. I just posted that as it has always been a "joke" that H-D riders never wave back at us Wingers ... but we're dumb enough to keep waving at everyone anyway.
Now that I've made my effort to soothe Thomas' feathers .... I probably shouldn't say that I found Rocky2's response highly amusing as my favorite punchline has always been that H-D actually stands for Hardly Driveable.
OK, back to serious mode, I'm sure that most serious and long-time Harley riders would agree with you ... the yuppie crowd is defintely enamored of the Marlon Brando look and are very, very amusing. And I won't even mention Jay Leno ........
Now then, on my side of the fence ... I have friends who have installed GPS, radar, and TVs on their Wings .... so ... who's really wackier?

Re: Wavin\' in the wind

ohhhh ... and you'll all get a kick out of a comment my wife made last Friday. I was out test-riding the new '02 Goldwing and getting really serious about buying it (still am) ... and my wife cleared her throat and said "you know, hon, that's not the same orange as your tractor ... if that's why you like that color!" (Pearl Orange)
Actually, I didn't think I was considering parking it beside the 'bota ... but, maybe, unconsciously ....

Re: Wavin\' in the wind

Wing Nut,
I was not trying to ignite a motorcycle religious war. Don't own a motorcycle, never have. I was just commenting on my observations. And your reply that HDers don't wave at Wingers seems to re-enforce those observations. Some sort of special mystique all becuase of your motorcycle?? I admit to being clueless on that one. Reminds of the JD "brotherhood of the green" attitude on the tractors forum at gardenweb. Very amusing.

Wingnut, You've got one of those wives, that think you're color blind too. My wife is always telling me the colors of different things. She doesn't pick out the clothes, that I'm going to wear YET!!! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
