At the start of winter I get acclimated pretty darn fast so I can go ice fishing in comfort. I stop shaving around Thanksgiving, and start going out to get the mail and newspaper barefoot and with no jacket, even in the snow. And I'll drive around with the truck window open, too. It doesn't take long at all to make yourself used to cold weather. Heat's another animal. :ashamed:

Psychology is another factor. I'm sitting here watching a mixture of wet snow and rain coming down outside the window. It feels cold even though the temperature in here is right where it should be.

Hey MendonSys,

Your Orleans county neighbor here-

When it's April and we're getting these white-out snow "flurries", and 20-30 degree [F] weather- it always feels colder to me...

I want to say that it's the increased relative humidity that we see this time of year, but it could just as likely be the fact that I'm dog-tired of winter.

Although I really appreciate the longer, sunnier days we're having, I really just want the snow to be over....

Funny though, my eldest brother was born May 9, 1945- and in Lancaster, NY where my mudder lived then, it snowed to beat the band [at least that's what she always maintained.

Yeah, it happens. I can remember one time in early May in the late 60's when we got a 6" wet snow storm after all the trees had leaves on them. Tree limbs were down all over. They were piled up on the side of one street in Victor so high that you could barely see the houses. It was a real mess!!

I contend there is no difference whether it be cold acclimation or heat acclimation. I've lived in both.

Ahh, but the thing about cold is you can always put on better gear and stay warm with nothing else. With heat, you can only take off so many clothes, you have to get out of the sun, you have to rest often, and you have to keep hydrated. I find it much more dangerous to be in the heat VS be in the cold.

There's been many days when I would sit on an upside down 5 gallon bucket in the middle of a lake at minus 0F. Been as cold as -22F. Caught some nice perch. Been in a boat at 101F... had to jump in the lake!

That's me all day at work- all the [non-menopausal] women I work with are always cold.

I'm all like, 'I'd wear less clothes, but nobody wants to see that...- maybe you could put a sweater on...'

I already wear short sleeve shirts all summer, and scrubs whenever I can justify it.

Then they use space heaters under their desks, which makes the thermostat thinks it's hotter, and fires up the A/C even more.

Oh well, I'm happy.
:dance1::cool2::thumbsup::laughing::cool:

It's a problem when you have battling thermostats for sure...

Never having lived in a home with A/C and growing up only remembering heat during the holidays when the people were over for Christmas I am on the side of preferring cooler rather than warmer.

The hottest winter I have ever spent was in Austria... I would be invited to colleagues homes and they would have an extra log in the wood hearth or turn up the radiant heat because they didn't want their California guest to be cold.

Another time there my car was a mess from winter driving... it was a nice sunny day so I thought I would give it a quick rinse... the water froze as it hit the car... what can I say... I grew up in California!

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is acclimatisation.

For example; we're heading into Winter and are beginning to experience fluctuating early Autumn temperatures = I'm tempted to start a fire at 13C. Yet I know that by towards the end of Winter the temperatures that are 'chilly' now will be practically balmy then.

As another extreme example; Darwin, capitol of the Northern Territory, has brutally hot Summers to everyone else except those who live there. During the Winter, they shut down the community pool because it's too cold for swimming. 27C!

Yep... High up in the alps in December there was a false summer... the sun was out and zero wind... the buds on trees were swelling... it was 50 outside and I saw folks in shorts all over... they had just experienced several weeks where the highs were freezing... 50 was like paradise.

My nieces compete in swimming year round and they will be in the water working out rain or shine... summer or winter... of course the water is heated... year after year when they classmates get sick these 3 girls never seem to catch any of the bugs yet they are out in 40 degree weather with just swimsuits...

I find the sun lovers I work with spend all day in a climate controlled building and then drive home over the hill where it was a 100+ all day and say how nice it was to go for a walk or ride at 8 pm at night...

Somehow I doubt most would feel the same if they had to work outside during the heat of the day.

Once I had a home I was selling in escrow and part of the deal was to put a new roof on the detached garage... it was up to 117 and never under a 100 that week... the roofing nails went right through the comp shingles... a gallon of Gatorade easy those two days...

When I lifeguarded at a local beach and public pools back in the 70's and 80's, city rules required us to close if the air temp dropped below 68F.
