In regards to this thermostat thing. I have no idea what temp it's set on. It gets adjusted until comfort is experienced. Why would I do any different?? If it's money driven, there are plenty of other places I can scrimp without discomfort. I totally don't get nudging the thermostat a couple degrees and forcing myself to accept it to save a few dollars..... :confused3:

As a native upstate NYer who痴 lived in multiple southern states before coming back to NY, I can attest that your absolutely mistaken. The pile ups and wrecks I witnessed in NC and other southern states during snowfalls amounting to nothing more than a couple inches were incredible. I made gobs of money during every storm ripping southerners from ditches with my F250. You値l see a wreck here and there up here in the north because well, stupid exists all over. But you値l never see towns or entire counties literally shut right down over 6 inches of snow. When we first moved to NC my younger sister missed an entire week of school because of a freak 10 inch snowstorm in Mooresville. We don稚 even shut down schools here for that, might get a 2hr delay to clear the roads a bit but that痴 about it. Trust me, southerners are absolutely TERRIBLE drivers in the snow and have no business even attempting it. What you saw on TV was nothing but a .0001% of New England drivers. I致e always said that southerners should be made to take winter driving classes before being allowed to drive in winter weather.

Also, my experiences driving in the southern states always include numerous case of people spinning out and hydroplaning in even mild rain- BECAUSE they can get away with driving on nearly bald tires almost year round, unless it rains or snows- you just CAN'T do that here...

Not to mention, do you KNOW what kind of control it takes to keep a donut-spin going at that kind of speed for that long- GREAT driving skills!

We vary our HVAC setting as the season changes. For heat in winter, it is set to 68F. In the summer I raise it to 72F for cooling. 68f in winter seems really warm when you come inside from working out in the cold and same for the 72F which is freezing cold after being in the 90+ outside temps. This works well for comfort and saves a few bucks on electrical cost.
68F is a bit chilly when just setting around in winter, but a small throw blanket over the legs takes care of that. It also takes care of visiting neighbors who like it 90F heated so they don't stay long.

No offense, but working out in the cold?

You've enjoyed several months of good weather, you need to suffer with the rest of us!!!! We are looking ahead to better, you are bracing for worse. Ain't this World great!!!!! :)

I am not planning on suffering this year as in July or thereabouts we are heading for somewhere north of the equator for 6 weeks, no secret, just don't know where as yet but anywhere with snow is off the list and it won't be anywhere with high humidity or any land with handbag stealing monkeys.
Considering parts of Europe (I hear Slovakia has some excellent beers at ridiculously low prices) and Northern India or a river trip in Southern India, just want to get away from the popular tourist routes but the locals must be friendly and prices reasonable.

Something that nobody thinks about is that comfort has multiple contributing factors, a common one forgotten is radiant temperatures where the wall is hotter/colder than the indoor air temperature.

Conversely there is wind chill.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is acclimatisation.

For example; we're heading into Winter and are beginning to experience fluctuating early Autumn temperatures = I'm tempted to start a fire at 13C. Yet I know that by towards the end of Winter the temperatures that are 'chilly' now will be practically balmy then.

As another extreme example; Darwin, capitol of the Northern Territory, has brutally hot Summers to everyone else except those who live there. During the Winter, they shut down the community pool because it's too cold for swimming. 27C!

This a good point too. One gets acclimated to the temperature you spend time in.

I did mention that in the beginning of the thread. After 3 days/ 3 pages though, it's easy to miss.
