I also wondered about steering with the same foot as the HST pedal, and had decided that it must be a cruise thing.

The manual says that the cruise is only cancelled by both brakes at the same time; one brake should not take you out of cruise. I have not tried cruise on my L2800, and have not flipped the bar on the back of the brake pedals to enable brake steering. Maybe next time I fire her up I'll remember to check it out.
