Lowe's price of $64 is outrageous. Don't pay more than $1 per lb, and even that is high. Most large JD dealerships buy these 42 lb'rs in large lots at low cost, and you should be able to get them for somewhere between $35-40, maybe less.

I just called the JD dealership and they sell them for 59.00. I don't think 35$ would be realistic.

I bought a 97 pound chunk of steel from the salvage yard for less than $15. ($0.15/lb. scrap) It's about 4x5x16 and already had a hole in it. It was probably used as a tractor weight. I've purchased 1 3/8" thick plate/flats there before and use them for press plates and/or bending dies. They have steel drops there all the time in various thicknesses, widths and lengths. They get $0.30 a pound for the clean drops which is basically new steel in lengths to 48" or so. Every time I see it, I stock up on 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2" flats. Usually in widths from 2" up to 12". And they even have angles occasionally. It's cheaper than going to big city and having to buy minimum lengths of the heavy stock.

The point is; with a little fabrication skills you can make your own weights for as little as 15 cents a pound.
