Interesting I have hit the thermal shutdown on my welder many times over the years (i got in 2001).

I do bevel when welding thick steel, but I see a lack of penetration when welding thick stuff.

On thick material, I run a downhill pass with my Titanium 125 Fluxcore welder. I bevel to feather edge then gap about 3/32". I find that the machine on G6 runs a fine root pass. Then I clean up the root pass with a grinder and run the rest uphill. Flat or horizontal I do the same but slant the tip of the gun a bit more into the weld puddle. The more vertical you get with the tip angle, the more penetration you get (sometimes much more than you want). Then I just drag the tip toward me, keeping the wire feet embedded in the puddle with a little side to side motion to tie into each bevel.
