Getting old. Sold the ranch. Sold the tractors. Moved back to the city.
I've read several threads in this forum in which reinforcing plates are welded to the bucket to install toothbars on the FEL.

IIRC, it's recommended that the tractor's battery cables be disconnected before welding to prevent damage to the vehicle's electrical system.

I'm interested in whether people usually take this precaution or if it's not that important. Has anybody out there actually damaged his/her tractor's electrical system by neglecting to do this?

I did NOT disconnect and it did not adversely affect my Bota when I welded chain hooks and backing plates on. I hooked the ground clamp directly on the bucket to try to isolate the juice.

I do think it's a good idea to take them loose.

well im sure the best way is to disconnect the battery, thats what most truck and tractor manufactureres tell you to do, but i will say that i work as a mechanic for a garbage company with almost all newer computer controlled trucks, never have i or any one else disconnected the batterys before welding on them, we usualy weld on a truck atleast once a week, and have never had a problem, but we are carefull to keep the ground clamp near the area you are working also. recently we did install master disconnects in all the trucks, the insurance company wanted them, and now if i weld on a truck i do turn the switch off if i think of it, but like i said alot of welding was done on the trucks without ever disconnecting the batterys. your results may vary......

As others have already stated. Keep the ground clamp on item being welded. You should have no problems.

Another good reason to have QA bucket or just remove the FEL if able too and there will be no wondering if any harm will come to any electrical system.

Yeah - I just took the bucket OFF when we welded the plate on for my toothbar.

Taking the bucket off will allow you to position the bucket for flat welds which always look and perform better, easier too. At least my welds work this way. Those backing plates for toothbars act as big washers so really only need to be tacked.

The muffler shops never diconnect batteries.
