I'm looking to buy a welding table and also some of the special clamps. This is a simple question but I can not find the answer. How do the clamps stay in the hole when clamping something down? Friction? Some kind of cam?

If they are the ones I am familiar with, the table will have t-slots and the clamp with have a t-slot nut

Real welding shops I know simply tack the work to the table and grind off the residue.
Also a professional weld shop make their tables with surplus or re cycled materials.

Hey, making a weld table is a darn good practice excersize.

If you are talking about the F clamps that just fit into a round hole you just push down on them. The clamp deflects and puts pressure on the workpiece

^^^DuckSlayer summed it up perfectly.

Here's my homemade clamps (typical 5/8" holes in table)

A mag drill makes it easy.

You can buy the F clamps at Harbor Freight if you want, cut the ends off and weld on a bolt or rod like Big Barn did. Much cheaper. I'm going to make a few myself.

If you want to go REAL cheap...... I bent up a couple of old tire irons. This one is shown in the pritchel hole of my anvil but they also work on my weld tables.

A LIGHT tap on the top secures the workpiece. An equally light horizontal tap releases it.
