well drilling / puunding

We pounded our well in 1993, went 200' and have great water, but not a lot of volume, (5gpm). Our next door neighbor went the rotary route, went 400'+ and got crap for water - high sulfur and iron and no better yield. The pounder took almost 2 weeks, the rotary was in and out in the same day. The old timers in the neighborhood recommend pounding.

5 GPM is usually considered much more than adequate for household use.

I know people who live on 1/3 GPM wells, and get along fine. They do need significant storage capacity.

I have about 3 GPM pounded well 125 feet installed in 1979. One pump motor.(knock on wood)

Plenty of water and recovery. Just don't water the lawn etc all at once.I do about 8-9 loads of laundry a day(kids).

Not a problem.

The latest update they pulled off Tuesday after Labor Day and never told me.
I couldn’t get up there to check on them because of my work schedule.

450 ft and 1/2 gallon a min water was up to 300 ft level approximately 200 gallons in well.

I asked them 3 or 4 times if they could go to 600 ft and haven’t got a straight answer why they left the owner says there are lots of houses that are on 1/2 gallon a minuet and with the 200 gallon storage in well I would be fine.

I got the bill with no driller report (required by state) I called and asked when he was going to finish up the job? He said he was done! I faxed contract to my lawyer he said to pay the bill and ask for the drillers report in writing.

Lawyer suggestion with the amount I was out take him to small claims court to cover the cost of having some one finish the job properly.

I got 2 estimates so far around $3000.00
I have to call the county sheriff to file a claim.

Then I will call better business bureau

Tom,
That's a bummer it turned out that way. The driller must be an ***hole. Hope you win the suit...serves him right.
What do the other drillers say about getting more water?

Just like grandpa! I put my own well in 30 years ago. I pounded a 1" 1/4" point into the basement floor and installed a 1/3 horse pump. The water table is down 18 feet. I measured by dropping a nut tied to a string into the top of the pipe. I then pounded the point to 6 feet past the top of the water table, used a pitcher pump till the water became clear and installed the pump. Good, clean, soft water is something we have plenty of in Michigan. Total cost $300.00

On the subject of 'witching'. While can do it (and do), I don't trust it. I ran into an oddity the other day. Needed to dig out my septic tank. I was fairly sure on the location but wasn't positive about edges. Tried the rods. They picked up the drain pipe in just fine but wouldn't show anything on the tank itself. Traced the pipe right up to it and then nothing.

1/2 gpm x 60x 24 =1460 gallons + 200 = 1640 gallons per day. Are you really that short of water ? 5gpm = 7200 gallons -nobody uses that in a residence.

What depth was discussed before the job started? I've never seen a pounder go much more than 450'. Not any pounders left in NH that I know of but there used to be quite a few. Now all are all rotary because they charge by the foot & can do more feet per day. Also make major bucks from refracing the wells, which was seldom done with pounded wells.
Here's another well driller that says you have plenty.
Tasker's Well Company, Inc.
search for other "Tasker's " articles -they've been drilling in NH for a long time. MikeD74T

There are still pounders around in NH. I had mine pounded 4 years ago by a guy from Henniker, after talking to another pounder out of Concord. I also know of another in Alton who pounded me one about 10 years ago. Although I haven't seen him for some time, I would be very surprised if he weren't still "pounding away."
