My apologies, I thought it was obvious what was missing: The good news! )"It's another good news/bad news kinda story...".)WHat is that cutter? You spent $2200 on a cutter that you were gonna take the gearbox off of and render it useless?
1. Again why not just get a $200 shaft to fix your old one? What am I missing?
2. Why not leave the cutter intact. You just spent $2200 on it, I am sure it is in ready-to-mow condition
The bad news is this gearbox won't work worth a crap on my BH 286.
The good news is that a Howse 7' HD cutter with dual tail wheels came free with the gearbox!

And the other good news: I did as Dieselbound suggested and checked the stump jumper/output shaft connection. I had them lift the cutter with a giant forklift and went under it. Solid as a rock.
This shouldn't be too surprising since the above pics show no damage to the deck indicating a loose SJ and/or blades. The blades weren't in too bad of shape either; obviously used but no heavy damage, nicks or gouges indicating abuse.
I haven't decided what to do with my BH286; parts to fix it are somewhere between $400-$475. If I get it fixed, it might be worth $1000-$1200 or so. I can probably get $500 as-is considering what I'm seeing on CL/FBMP, but that's just a guess.
And I also did what LD1 et al suggested and checked the input shaft, which is a 1 3/8" six splined shaft, indicating a 540 rpm machine. And unlike BH, Howse shows no 1000 rpm variants for this machine (Howse CRB842).
This cutter is very equivalent to the BH 287 cutter; which I would call both them Heavy Duty. Both have 110 HP or so gearboxes, both weigh ~1100 - 1200 lbs and both have a 2" cutting capability. Both recommend a 50 hp machine as the minimum tractor HP (mine is about 40).
