how do you teach all the various wildlife in your area to urinate/defecate outside of the watershed that serves your well ? ;)
One just uses the the Earth as a filter, provided the well is installed & maintained proper.. In class, they taught us that the Earth was the largest water filter known to man...

We have a dual filtration system followed by a UV sterilisation.

We have a summer dominant rainfall, and have to have enough capacity to store enough water to last through Autumn, Winter and Spring.

No problem filling the tanks once Summer rolls around again

This sounds like an interesting system. Any info available such as what the tanks are made of or lined with, size, company name, etc.

BTW - are you on a well out there on those 40 acres ?

If so, how do you teach all the various wildlife in your area to urinate/defecate outside of the watershed that serves your well ? ;)

Of course we are on a well.

As already stated, the earth is a wonderful filter. Our well is 720 feet deep, but only has steel casing for the first 75 feet. Anything below 75 feet drops to the bottom of the well and mixes with the rest of the water, so I can only claim 75 feet of dirt filtration.

We do get the water tested, so if any bacteria show up, I will be doing DNA tests on the wildlife and sending them in for remedial education...

thats cause the birds land on the roof during the summer more often! :D

(Cisterns are available still) many types, they need to be underground for best use. usually there is a rural service that will truck in water or you can buy a tank & truck in your own on a heavy trailer/truck. they are not in-expensive though and often cost nearly as much as a well by time they are bought, trucked in assembled (yes some come un-assembled) holes dug lines plumbed pumps bought ect ect ect.)

Usually when the plastic/metal line that the submersible pump hangs form it wears the hole in line the pump pressure sprays out against the side of the well bore, rinsing the mud, silt sand & gravel into the well bore/bottom. normally the well casing does not fail unless like other said tectonic problems. I'm glad I called it right when I said hole in line way back.

not sure why all the problems with the well driller though wandering is normal on older wells usually new equipment can FOLLOW that and open the hole up to next size. that is assuming the old casing is usable or can be yanked out.

might not cost more though to drill all new well in the long run.

Like others said not sure why the casing is so deep? usually less than 40' of casing for wells mine has 26' of casing and like others said only case down to the bedrock for most cases. locally there is a LARGE amount of sand stone which makes for decent water. My well is getting OLD and thinking of getting costs to have the 4" galv casing pulled and re-drilled with 6" and put in PVC casing. more water volume no rusty water and can have it piped deeper too...

Depends on the permeability and porosity of the overburden.:D

The tanks are concrete precast in two sections, top and bottom. They are buried although they don't need to be, it keeps to water temperature cooler in summer

All rainwater is diverted from the roof into the concrete tanks.

A pump with a pressure switch provides the water on-demand to the house, passing through the two filters and the UV sterilisation.

I'll take a few pictures if you're interested.
