Sorry I never got back. To make a long story short, I had a well contractor come out and take a look. I took the day off of work so I could be here. They pulled the pump out and the discharge piping was intact as were all of the fittings. The pump itself was shot. It was actually 15 years old (I found the original receipt) and the contractor told me that given the conditions it had been pumping in (water with a pH of 5.5 to 6.2, and sediment) he was suprised that it lasted as long as it did. As it so happened the contractor stocked the same model pump. It is a Grundfos 10S05-9, all stainless steel, guaranteed for 5 yrs. It was a direct replacement for $765 installed, and I got to keep the old pump. Figure I'd refurb it so if I ever had to do it again.
Thanks to everyone for the help and advice.
