Maybe somebody can explain the gimmick of the companies giving a thousand dollar discount if you finance with their in-house finance company like Ally for GM but Ford does the same thing? The dealers claim you can get the thousand discount and then pay it off or refi in 90 days. So what is the trick that makes this worthwhile to them?

When I bought my 09 f150 I had to finance with Ford to get the thousand off. I did it and paid Ford off a few days later. This was not an option when my wife bought a new Ford Explorer a couple months back.

1500HDs are fairly uncommon. I believe all came in the crew cab version. They are nice trucks.

I say this on all these threads but forget the 3/4 ton and go for a 1 ton SRW. They sell more 1 ton SRW trucks around here now days than 3/4 tons because guys have figured this out. GM was late to the game but 08 and later its been the case. Ford has been this way since about 97 or 99 and Dodge was close to follow.

Again, this is my local dealers.

In the Ford line-up its about $600 difference between a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton SRW. Also be aware there are nearly 15 different GVWR packages with Ford SRW trucks form 8,800# to 11,500# so while it may look like your buddies truck it can be way more or way less. I will only buy F-350 SRW 4x4's with 11,500# packages from now on. They ride the same and handle so much better with a load when compared to the lighter sprung trucks.

GM and Dodge are much more streamlined with the GVWR packages having only 1 or 2 options.

Chris
Chris, I appreciate the advice. I owned a 350 SD Ford some years ago, and it was a beast of a truck. I think I am going to stick to the 3/4's for now. One reason is that in Ohio it is somewhat difficult to buy a non commercial insurance policy on a one ton truck, not impossible, but you have to look around, as many companies will not write it. I went through this with my F 350.

GM has building SRW 1 tons for over 30yrs. They quit for several years in the 2000's and then started again.

Lots of them around here. Like you said, most I see are 6L Crew Cab. One of our co-pilots had one for a year or so before trading it for a F-150.

I know they built them for awhile but what I was saying was my local Ford and Dodge dealers stocked more SRW 1 tons then they did 3/4 tons or Duallys because that is what guys want around here. GM dealers locally took a while to catch up but now I am seeing more 1 ton SRW trucks from them also.

I only live a few miles from Ohio and 3/4 of my customers are Buckeyes. I would say 1/2 or better drive F-350 SRW trucks and a few with Duallys. My uncle lives in Middletown and has had 2 F-350 SRW trucks and I have never heard any of them have a single issue with that. Shop around.

Since you began talking about SRW 1 ton pickups I've been looking to see if there are any around. Today I finally saw one after about 2 months of trying to see if any are on the road around here. I know dealers down here don't stock any because they just don't sell and have to dealer trade for one if a customer wants one. I guess one could say they are about as common as hen's teeth in my area. If I'm going with a 1 ton, I want the far greater stability and ability to take much greater tongue weight. They sure will wear out front tires faster, but I'll take that trade off for my needs.

I drove an 2011 F250 super cab short bed gasser today. It was a well equiped xlt with sync, steering wheel audio controls, and the chrome appearance package. Initialy my experience was not to good, as it was pouring rain, and the salesman drove me a quarter mile or so out to the truck, unlocked it with the keyless, slapped a plate on it and said park it up by the building when you are done. He hopped back in the shuttle van and drove away. I jumped in the 250 and hit the key and the battery was dead. I walked the quarter mile in the rain back to the building. The salesman was very red faced and kept apoligizing, i just laughed and told himn not to worry about it. This unit must have been sitting for a pretty long time I thought to myself.

A mechanic came out and jumped it, we let it run for about 10 min and I hopped in it and took off. The 6.2 had no trouble moving the 250 down the road, and never felt inadequate power wise, despite the 3.73 gears the truck was equiped with. I realy liked the full center console and electric locking rear diff. The front seats and driving position were top notch, and I noticed ford actualy still puts real useable tow hooks on the front of their trucks instead of those tiny little eyelets that you cant even slip a chain through that the others use. I was not real impressed with the handling or visibility, it was just okay. The supercab back seat is crap as far as I am concerned and not up to the level of the rest of the truck, The front seat area is top notch and stylish, then you get to the back and get a 3in thick seat with unfineshed foam rubber headrest, not up to par in my book. The Silverado had the Ford covered hands down in the back seat dept.

Unfortunately, my overall opinion of both trucks so far is they are okay, but I have not been blown away by either of them, although they both have some features that i realy like such as the locker in the Ford and the well thought out interior in the GM. I still have to drive a Dodge.

As of right now I am considering just putting 5 or 6 thousand in my current truck and driving it for a few more years. I have yet to drive a brand new one so far that I like nearly as much.
