I did something similar for my garage. I found I had dificulty following the pencil lines with the router. What I did was use wallpaper paste and glued the pattern to the sign blank and just routered through the paper. When I was done I washed the sign with water, softened the pattern and it came right off.

Hmmmm, that sounds a lot easier to me than tracing the design using carbon paper. Maybe I should try that idea on a piece of scrap and see how I do. Thanks for the tip....

Hey Mike,

Looks like a real fun project. Thanks for sharing the pictures, this is a thread I'll enjoy following.

Thanks,
Eddie

Have you seen sandblasted signs? The hard grain is raised and the softer grain is more recessed, I saw lots of these when I went back to Maine, here is an example of one for you

Jimi those signs look pretty nice. I just hope my wife doesn't see them or she'll make me auction the new router at eBay. ;)

Free hand routing is not near as easy as Norm makes it look (on New Yankee Workshop) , can you make a guide template out of masonite or something first?

I would definitely practice on some scrap before you "plunge" in! :)

I 'd second that idea of template(s) ... you could make more than one and move them as you need....that's a fairly involved sign and all it will take is one OOPS to mess up the whole thing ... taking the time to make templates will save you in the long run.
