I am pretty sure it needs stands. I unhooked everything but the hyd. today and put a set of jackstands under it . I backed away from the loader and it wouldn't stand buy itself. I didn't try tipping the bucket all the way. I think the loader was built in the mid 80's.

Here is a link to the Operators Manual for the John Deere 520 and 540 loaders. Scroll down on the left side to section 35 and 45. Click on these to read the procedure for removing and attaching the loader. These should be similar to yours and hopefully will give you some ideas on how to make some stands. I will also post a link to the 542 loader. The stands for the 542 are probably easier to make, since they do not hinge. They are stored in the cross tube and pin into the stand brackets when needed.

Found this website. It says that it doesn't use stands, everything is connected/disconnected from the seat.
