Woody -- Thanks. I use a Mini-Ligno meter to check MC. I've heard from a couple of others that a light planing is a good idea. I'll try that after the next hurricane topples a few trees for me!

Right now I'm running the 10 footers one at a time thru the drum sander to get one good reference surface so I can use the planer on the other side. The 6" jointer that looked so big in the store looks sort of puny next to those stacks of lumber! Someone told me the planer would work if I take tiny bites, but I think the rollers would prevent the waviness from being planed out.

How does this work? I'm not that familar with drum sanders. I joint one face and then plane, but am limited by a 6" jointer. I have looked at thickness sanders for stock wider than my 12" planner, but never realized this feature of truing one surface. Is this because there are no feed rollers or what? Thanks in advance.

Al -- I tried it out of desperation. Running them thru my planer didn't eliminate the variance because as soon as the board came out from under the rollers the curve would spring right back. My 6" jointer couldn't handle 12" boards. So I ended up running them thru the drum sander (I have the Delta) with a coarse grit (36) repeatedly. Because the table is absolutely flat, the drum roller does an excellent job of giving me one flat surface. It's really SLOW going, though! /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I gotcha, thanks Pete. Slow is sometimes good when your working wood, it gives you a chance to back out of a catastrophe. Mistakes have generated many new projects for me. Example, start kitchen table... end coffee table.

two winters ago i thought quick and dirty shelving wood get me money. haha yet three years later people want me to make them. had three sizes at 100 down to 50. gonna make a killing. practcally gave the only three away, yet now i could sell hundreds, at 50. So then i made rooms of flooring and trim. way more money but slower payers. payeur in canada is way good with kioti.
