Okay, we're clearly well-past "what am I looking at?". But, I do have pictures of the ongoing rebuild of the 881D that I'm using to document that condition of the engine, etc.

Here's the block - head removed.

Now the Head showing the valves (gasket still needs to be scrapped and things aren't a dark and dreary as this picture suggests.)

Here's Cyl1 (counting back to front) from above and below. Note the heavy carbon build-up/rust? above the piston, and some rust that was visible from underneat before I was able to free the piston.

For comparison, here's cyl #4 (also free) from above and below.

Finally, here's a shot of the ringgear (starter removed). Looks pretty decent - teeth intact and not real worn.

Hey, let me know if you like these pics and are enjoying my little project. I'd be happy to put up more pics as things progress. It's all a learning experience for me as I'm not really much of a mechanic and it's my first rebuild project.

Thanks for visiting!
Pete :)

I know I do and would enjoy watching over your shoulder. :D

I appreciate it . . . Of course my wife doesn't, but then again my 2 year olds favorite thing in the world is a tractor. . . . . he gets it!

Maybe in a few years. . . . ;)

Pete, This might not be worth doing in your case, but here's a starter wrench for stuck engines : THE BAR STARTER. Check out the "King's" website & you'll see more stuck engines that were sucessfully resurrected. MikeD74T

You've got some pretty good rust in that #1 cylinder. In addition, your engine has been rebuilt at least once already, and the pistons are 0.020 oversized. I'm guessing that the #1 cylinder may be pitted enough to require it to be rebored (doesn't look like this block has sleeves). I don't know what the maximum overbore is on that block, but hopefully the rust isn't too deep.

You can estimate that by just looking at the pics? Impressive . Can I ask how you can tell? Anyway, according to the I&T shop manual the later hundred series tractors didn't have sleeves. Of course the good news is that if I was willing to have the cylinders rebored, I should be able to either find a set of oversize pistons or I could drop in a set of sleeves with matching pistons. Engine rebuild kits of this type seem pretty standard for the 172 Diesel engine.

Thanks by the way. This is definitely the kind of advice I'm going to need. At some point I have to decide whether it's worth it at this point to attempt an overhaul. Obviously, if this block has had it - then that's probably the end of the road for this tractor. . . . :(

Man. . . when I had the starter replaced in Feb I found that the bendix had some problems retracting, so I just got a new one and left the broken one at the autoparts store . . . Should have grabbed it . . . who knew

Question: ytmag sells rebore kits for 172 diesels.

Rebore Kit, 172 Diesel - For Models: 800, 900, 4000. All with 172 diesel engine, non sleeved. Available in std., .020, .030, .040. (Part No: RK172D)

Does this mean that it would be possible, depending on how deep the pitting might be to rebore up to 0.40? I know little to nothing about the specifics of this process. Also, what would you recommend for cleaning up the cylinders? Is this typically done with an acid bath, or are their semi-abrasive cleaners?

Thanks,
pete

The cylinder walls would be cleaned up with a hone, and if there is not pitting, you could get by with that. I can't really tell from the photos, but to me it doesn't look all that bad.

Good luck!
