Only one picture. From a cheap trail cam. About 40 feet from back door. Night time/ early morning so it's kind of a grainy picture. Max size I would guess is about 18- 20 inch tall. Camera is about 8 feet from animal.

The trail cam is showing low battery. So it only took one picture.
I wasn't sure but I thought a bobcat had a shorter tail. Thanks everyone my neighbor thought the bad picture was a mountain lion. Not supposed to be here according to DNR but.......

What I first mistook for a tail was actually something in the background.

Here in Vermont, The fish and game department flat out states there are NO catamounts in our state. And ...

If you see one, you are not permitted to shoot it!

;-)

We Do have bob cats. See then every year.

Classic pose for a bobcat. The tail length here is a little variable.

All the best,

Peter

I think it's a Lynx

Bobcats and lynx are both wild cats in the Lynx genus that have ear tufts and facial ruffs, but they have several differences:

  • Size
Bobcats are the smallest of the lynx species, ranging from 26–41 inches long, while lynx can be much larger. For example, the Eurasian lynx can be 32–51 inches long and weigh 40–66 pounds.

Nice thought, but unless @JPRambo took the photo a long way from home, it would be a bit doubtful based on known ranges of Lynxes and Bobcats;

We may have a transient pass through occasionally but I doubt we have a resident population. I've been all over this state and 3 other border states for 45 years in all sorts of weather, and have never seen sign or talked to anybody else who has.
I've heard all sorts of reports but they are like Yetis; leave no tracks or spoor, and somehow have the ability to blur cameras so that nobody can get a decent picture.
There have been a couple found over the years which have evidence of previously being domesticated.

My grandfather was deer hunting back in 1958 and saw what may have been the last confirmed sighting. Things were different back then and he shot at it but missed. The game Warden went after it with dogs but they never caught up to it.
You won't read about that in any official reports but there is an article about it buried somewhere in the archives of the Lewiston Sun/Journal.

I saw a catamount less than a mile from my place about 20 years ago.

You can tell me I was mistaken, but I know what I saw.
