Get some pepper spray, change job, stay away from bad areas. Be home and in bed by 1000pm. All your necessity for a fire arm and training goes away. Problem solved.

Until some junkie kicks in the back door when I am out fishing and my wife is alone!

Pretty sage advice Dan. As for the "husband" thing, I have seen that countless times. If you are the woman's husband, forget about it. Most wives won't take critique even the best intentioned and carefully worded critique from their husbands. Get someone else to train your wife on technique. Get an "expert". You likely aren't. And even if you are, you don't count. As for the the revolver, semi auto choice. I still say leave it up to the woman if she can handle the semi auto, and shoots it well and can load, clear malfunctions and manipulate it safely, why not? Of course the revolver drill is easier, and if there is any doubt she can operate a semi auto, then revolver it is. Some women really like revolvers, but some don't. I always introduced both, and let them fire as many rounds as possible through both, and fully load, unload, and manipulate both. There is something to be said for the simplicity of the revolver even when neglected, but they can and do fail occasionally. But not very often.

In my experience as an adult education instructor I've seen it as a two way street. Women are not as open to instruction by their informed/experienced husband as they are from an acknowledged specialist and men aren't as receptive to instruction from a knowledgeable wife as they are from the well informed stranger. It's a spouse thing. I know I failed miserably at teaching my wife to swim even though I had been a Red Cross certified water safety instructor aide, a water safety instructor and a certified life guard and spent virtually every day at the swimming pool in one professional capacity or another during the summers of my youth. I experienced the same failure trying to instruct my wife in archery even though at the time I was a shooting advisor for an archery equipment manufacturer. She learned little and I grew frustrated. The light went on for me when a fellow competitor asked if I would teach his wife to shoot. He told me that he couldn't get her to do anything for him and thought she may be more inclined to listen to me. We did a little wife swapping (the family friendly kind) and both ladies learned to shoot. Our families became great friends and all competed against one another for many years. I have learned that if my darling bride wants me to teach her some skill I happen to have and it isn't going to our satisfaction I ask a knowledgeable compatriot to take over for me.

The standard best answer has always been to "take her somewhere to handle and shoot a bunch of different guns and let her choose what feels right to her."

Everybody likes something different. I carry a S&W J-frame revolver everyday. My Wife carries a S&W Shield 9mm. She went through a few options before deciding what works best for her. The gun she initially liked most turned out to be the one she now likes least, and even refuses to carry.

Many ranges and clubs also have women-only training classes, where they can get together without any male intimidation. If you can find one of those local to you, I've never talked to anyone who didn't enjoy them. In the end, just don't force something on her that she may not like because you think it might be better than her choice. If she doesn't like it, she won't carry it, and at that point a CCW license is virtually worthless.

very good advise .. Everyone is different. If they weren't, everyone would like /carry the same gun.
Let her decide which gun feels /shoots best for her.

After her purchase, let her take some courses on how handle the gun in a stressful situation . You would be surprised how many people don't know what to do when you have a double feed /jam, etc,.

Why live in those places and have to carry, MOVE out of danger. Use your brain, elevate yourself and separate yourself from the riffraff.

I do my best but I still keep my pistol. I also do my best not to set stuff on fire but still keep a fire extinguisher.

I understand, I have a brother in law who lives in a million dollar plus home in Aspen CO, and he never leaves the house unarmed, either car or person. I feel sorry for him he lives in that much fear from day to day. It makes no sense to me. A would recommend a women should get an ASP baton, and carry that, do some training with it, you might have a good conceal right there without messing with handguns. Generally handguns take a lot of training, which has to be kept up, more than most if not all are not willing to maintain proficiency. For the home a really innocuous home defense weapon is a real Roman sword, you reach in and lose an arm. Had that young USO girl had an ASP baton old Al Franken would still limp today.

Yeah, but that does not always work.

Recently, a lady was working alone after hours, but not really that late, in her office behind a very stout, locked door. A thug robbed a Walmart of a bunch of bras. Yes, bras. He ran out of the store, down the street, and for some reason, into the building where this lady was working. The security camera footage shows the guy attacking the door at least five times I could see before the door opened. The day tried to call 911 what the call would not connect, which is odd to say the least, so she grabbed her revolver and when he came out her, she shot him.

Course, the family of the thug were upset that he was shot and killed. Not so concerned that he was a thief and attacked the lady.

DA did not file charges.

This was not in a bad part of town either.

We still have an unsolved murder in my town. We have very few murders in the entire county, much less the town, but there you go. The victim was a woman, home alone, in the center of town, a couple of blocks from Sheriff office, and in a nice part of town. She lived in a good, safe county and town, in a safer neighbor hood, very near The Law, was home before 10:00pm but she is dead.

Later,
Dan
