And so the warrior must strive to confront denial in all aspects of his life, and prepare himself for the day when evil comes.

If you are warrior who is legally authorized to carry a weapon and you step outside without that weapon, then you become a sheep, pretending that the bad man will not come today. No one can be "on" 24/7, for a lifetime. Everyone needs down time. But if you are authorized to carry a weapon, and you walk outside without it, just take a deep breath, and say this to yourself... "Baa."

h.

My wife simply will not carry because she knows I do and she is mostly always with me. If something happens to me, then she will cross that bridge and do something. Right now I am just trying to get her comfortable with a home defense weapon for at night. I thought both articles were right on. Thanks for putting it out there.

Lots of opinions and questions in this thread. Reminded me of two of my favorite essays I've saved for years. I'll share them here because they are an excellent read. Why the Gun in Civilization? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By Maj. L. Caudill USMC (Ret) Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it. In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some. When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force. The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single gay guy on equal footing with a carload of drunken guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender. There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we'd be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a [armed] mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger's potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat; it has no validity when most of a mugger's potential marks are armed. People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that's the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly. Then there's the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser. People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don't constitute lethal force; watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level. The gun is the only weapon that's as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn't work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn't both lethal and easily employable. When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation, and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.
Have you ever trained or supervised women in a law enforcement job, to use fire arms become proficient and confident, and qualified? It's not the same for as men, as for women. All that sounds great but but doesn't translate to everyone, including men. It's really about temperament.

Two good articles.

I have said many times before, on this forum and verbally, that I would have a hard time pulling the trigger on somebody who was threatening me. But threaten my wife, children, or heaven help you my grandchildren, and I will come after you with every ounce of force I can muster. The consequences be dammed.

That is just what a husband, father, grandfather does.

I think the difference in men and women and use of force is ingrained thru thousands of generations. A person protects their offspring. If a village was attacked the women would gather their children and hide/run/ or fight as a last resort to protect THEIR children. The man would fight to protect the village because that was were their children were. The same actions have carried over to the modern era. It is a system that has worked to preserve the species.

Well I guess you overlooked the whole of the Middle East.... Lol... So much for those ideas. Get out of the intellectual class room and into reality.

For a person that has trouble racking a slide, a little semi-auto with a tip up barrel is a reasonable option.
I had a Beretta Tomcat (.32ACP) for years. My wife picked it out for her, but she never carried it...figured I may as well carry it. For a belly gun, it was pretty nice.

Since I'm more of a 9mm guy, and don't have trouble racking a slide or any problems with a longer trigger pull, I ultimately sold the Tomcat...but I still recommend one.
Here's a video for your viewing pleasure:

All that said, my most frequently carried gun is a Taurus 85 Ultralight. I have one with an exposed hammer and one with a shrouded hammer. Great little revolvers!

Small revolvers are an excellent choice for women. I'd second that recommendation.

A - Try to keep in mind I am not the author of the essay ... but I do agree with it.
B - Yes ... I went through the State Police Firearm's IDS in '95 and have qualified a few female LEOs. But their mindset is different than the majority .... and that is also explained in the Sheep - Sheepdog & Wolf theorem.
