Some of the newer automatics in the Fords will do the downshift for you. User interaction is not required.

That would be nice. I'll try and rent one sometime.

The CVT transmission and active distance controlled cruise control is perfect for resolving this type driving situation.

I took my granddaughter to a circus 40 miles north by interstate.
There was heavy traffic, and hills going to the circus, construction, single lane, coming back.

The Honda CR-V handled it perfectly,,, I set the CC to 71MPH,,, all situations were handled.
The CVT transmission changed to handle the hills, the active CC slowed the car down to handle the traffic and construction.

I do not think I could go back to driving a "fixed speed" CC,,, :confused2:

Well put. Don't mind the troll.
Who's the troll? What have you contributed?
You asked "Please explain."

I explained.
You got angry.

I didn't get angry. This is a good discussion, that clearly there are two sides to.

If I average 55mph, and get to 58 in anticipation of a hill, and have slowed to 52 by the crest, before resuming 55 again.......my question was simple. How is that gonna cause you grief?

Sure, you replied that by you noticing my speed up, YOU decide to follow in kind and increase speed, to 60 to catch back up, Just in time for me to be cresting the hill only going 52, causing you to brake.

That's self-induced grief, not by my doing. If you would just maintain your 55mpg cruise setting, and stay....8 carlenghts back on the flat.....you would be fine. When I get 16 lengths ahead of you.....let me go, cause you will make that ground back up after we crest.

So it seems to me, from my side of the aisle on this debate, that those in the CC camp have the wrong mindset by thinking it's more important to maintain a constant distance from the car in front, rather than maintain a constant speed themselves.

The last vehicle has to travel 49.75 MPH,,,, because the first vehicle has a speedometer that is .25 MPH out of calibration.
Or 50.25. I'd bet the speedometers aren't even that close. Tread wear on the tires, not replacing the tires with exact replacements, or wrong air pressure could easily vary the speed. That's assuming the speedometer was precisely calibrated to begin with.

I'm convinced, most of you pro cruise control guys need to be sitting in the back seat of an autonomous driving car, sipping your latte.

A good friend of mine just bought one of those and she loves it. Her husband disables all the features when he drives it.

It was a nice looking vehicle, too.

Go read the links I posted.

I got behind one of these south of Anchorage. Must have had several miles of cars behind. I believe someone finally passed and forced them to pull over.

I only use cruise control in speed trap areas. The rest of the time I drive at whatever speed I feel is best. I slow down on corners, speed up on straightaways. I slow up a little on hills if it avoids downshifting, speed up on downhills to take advantage of gravity. I learned all of this while riding a bicycle as a kid. Only then I couldn't piss off cruise control drivers. And if they don't like it and pass me, we are polite and signal to each other that each of us is #1 :D

Then the problem is the person passing. Not the person slightly varying speed.

Once that passer gets around the person varying speed, and I resume my minor fluctuation, of 52-58 as used in the example, and you are a few hundred feet back with Cc set at 55, I am not gonna cause you issues. The guy passing and wanting to go faster than the both of us is the issue.

If you don't like my driving, go around. Or stop and get a soda then resume your trip.

You continually miss the point that I am not the only one you are inconveniencing. You keep coming back to the hills, your variation on the flat aslo has consequences. Vary speed from 52-58!!! Wow!

 Amen Brother! Perhaps stop at a doc for some anti-anxiety meds if someone's driving makes you mad. Road rage is for morons, idiots, and losers. There's a lot bigger things to worry about in the average person's life than the miscellaneous drivers on the road. If the way other folk drive is a major concern in your life, you are very well off indeed.

People causing problems on the highway IS the cause of road rage.
