when you see that chain / cable / rope sling past your head and missing you barely. a few times like i have, ya start thinking.... hmmmmsss is there a better way of doing this?
I had this experience when I was 19 and working for a local lumber co. One of the drivers got his rig stuck, so they sent me with a pallet load of lally columns on a Mack 10 wheel flatbed to help him over a hill. With 3 20 ft lengths of 3/8 binder chain hooked end to end I was able to hook onto his front frame hook and have my rears on solid ground. He was stuck but good, so I had to give him a running yank. Looking thru the rear window as the truck lurched forward, I saw the chain bunching up and thought "that's queer". Next thing I knew it hit the steel head board and scared me half to death. People say chains just drop, and I'm sure they mostly do, but I have witnessed otherwise.
