What can you do with a Virginia possum?

Well - we got the turkeys transplanted in Ea WA about 15 years ago, fortunately the opossums weren't part of the deal. The turkeys are bad enough............

Actually a flock of turkeys is a miniature version of a band of Texas wild hogs. They will rip the snot out of a yard or field in a heartbeat.

There's probably a number of things that could cause that behavior, not just rabies, possible distemper, either way you probably put it out of it's misery.

This possum incident happened less than a week after a rabid skunk in broad daylight about 1:00 PM chased me while I was firing a .357 magnum at it. I managed to hit it on the 6th shot, and it was gaining on me. I was about 14, and somewhat unnerved about that incident. We were not taking any chances with Mr. Possum. He got the gasoline and match treatment just like Mr. Skunk

This was 40 years ago, but I don't remember the skunk stink being present. Of course burning hair, flesh and gasoline is not exactly great by itself. If I remember correctly we retreated some distance from both the skunk and possum carcasses. The Skunk was about 1/4 mile from the house near the pond, and I think we just walked back to the house..I was armed with an old Herters .357 magnum revolver. I can tell you that 5 bullets into the ground near Mr. Skunklet did not deter it even one bit. I was starting to get worried. In my experience any animal you shot at and missed, usually ran the other way post haste. Not this guy.

I've always preferred to photograph wild animals instead of shooting them but that was before my favorite horse died from "possum disease".(Equine Protozoal Encephalytis)

Any possum around my property now won't be here long.

Although you called it possum disease, there are many carriers for the parasite that causes the illness

Any skunks I encountered have pretty much dismissed me as "not a threat to me" and just mossied on along with the occasional lift of the tail if eye contact was made. None have ever came at me. That must have been an uh-oh moment! :laughing:

My grandfather was born in 1910 and told me as a young boy his papaw loved possum baked with sweet taters. Told me that there was more grease in the roasting pan than meat. They would put them up a couple weeks feeding cornbread and grain to clean them out.

No, possums are the only animal that is a definitive host for EPM that can transmit it to horses through their feces.
