What can you do with a Virginia possum?

Saw something laying in the middle of the street down by the mailboxes yesterday, sure enough, a big 'ol possum, had to be over 15 pounds, which is big for around here. It was intact so I got a pitchfork and cat food bag and got it off the road; they reek like a Burnside bum at best, I sure didn't want to put up with one smeared for a hundred yards all winter. Had to happen the day after garbage was picked up.

When I was a kid we lived on a busy road and coons, opossums and cats etc. were constantly getting hit by cars...most of the houses were built on short piers with open crawl spaces under...a lot of the mortally injured animals would make it up under someones house before it died...
Besides mowing lawns etc. for spending money I had a big (fishing) gaff hook attached to the end of a long bamboo pole I used to drag the carcasses out and bury them for a few bucks...the opossums were always the most malodorous.
