What can't two wheel tractors do?

/ What can't two wheel tractors do? #11
By the way, I have put far more on my log trailer then this. I added an upside down woodsplitter so I don't have to handle any firewood by hand, and added a grader blade. I am currently working on fabricating a feller-buncher head for it. They are pretty versatile.

Last year we got a grant to build a road across our property and needed 350 cubic yards to do it. We have a gravel pit, but a contractor wanted $7000 to move the dirt a half mile. Our trailer can only move 1 cubic yard at a time, but we deduced if we did 10 trips per day, in 35 days we could have the road done, and we did. That one job paid for the trailer.

I honestly cannot think of one thing a 2 wheel tractor cannot do towing this trailer. I just do not know why more people do not buy them???????????

Here are some photos of different homemade uses...

IMO, anything requiring weight.

E.G., I cannot pull a drag harrow with one. The wheels just spin - maybe if I had tracks?

Pushing or pulling anything heavy that is not wheeled itself, and even then not much, especially in loose dirt/mud/snow.

I wonder how many of them you would have to "chain together" to pull this load of firewood home for me?? lol

So I am confused.

I do not see any two wheeled tractors in those photos.

No, mine is too big for a two wheel tractor as it is sized for a farm tractor. But they do make them a size smaller and that would be ideal for a 2 wheel tractor with tracks. My point was how practical a log trailer could be behind one; albeit a size smaller.

I love 2 wheel tractors though and just bought my father one.

What I see is many people buying way too much tractor for their property. If a person only had 30 acres or so, they would end up with a really nice woodlot using a 2 wheel tractor with tracks, and an atv sized log trailer. Not only would they spend about the same money as buying a 4 wheel tractor, they would have a lot more capable machine from doing so. Having the ability to lift and load almost anything makes it far more versatile then a front end loader. But the greatest thing is, they would have nothing but walking paths through his forest in getting out their firewood, and doing other jobs around the homestead. This is the work-around regarding their inability to lift.

To answer your question; just one 2 wheel tractor would be needed to move that load of wood. That is because if it was put on a small trailer 20 times, a single 2 wheel tractor could move that load of wood and accomplish the same thing that you did; the same amount of firewood delivered from stump to wood stove.

On another forum, a guy is cutting firewood and getting the wood out of a wet area by pulling the wood out by a plastic sled by hand. He thought we would make fun of him for the way he did so. NO WAY! I have some loggers cutting off parts of my farm right now and one area is down in a really wet area. They literally have 1 million dollars worth in heavy equipment and they cannot get to the wood because it is too wet. Their feller-buncher can sort of get to it, but their skidders sink out of sight as soon as they start to pull. What good is cutting 100 cord of wood per day if the wood cannot get out?

Sometimes smaller is better.

I kind of wish I had one just to mess with just so I could see how much work I could pull out of it. I know RG LeTourneau always said, "there is no such thing as a big job, just small equipment", and in the 1960's it indeed had its place, but my personal philosophy is seeing what big jobs I can accomplish with smaller equipment. But in this case my father always wanted one, I was in a position to help him out, and did just that. Considering all he has done for me, it was great to give it to him. I got enough toys to play with.

I have a little under 20 acres of forest.

If I need to haul wood or logs, I use one of my 4x4 trucks (small Toyota and large Dodge with 8x12 flatbed).

I use my Grillo for mowing and brush cutting. It will not pull anything of any significant weight, including logs - I use the trucks for that (usually the big truck as the small truck will just sit there and spin it tires on large logs or logs in a pile). I had to use the small truck to pull a drag harrow to smooth out some ground because the Grillo would not pull it - just spin its tires.

This is why I say a 2 wheel tractor will have problems with pulling weight - probably even with a trailer - there just isn't enough traction there. Even my small truck has problems with some logs (granted, skidding them instead pulling a trailer).

For pulling things, if you didn't have a truck or 4 wheel tractor, an ATV will work for many things.

YMMV

That's JUST what I need, to have to make 20 half mile trips!!!

NO thank you!

And, that did NOT answer my question...

I honestly have never seen a 2 wheel tractor, in my neck of the woods they call those bicycles, but anyway.....seriously now, I use my 4x4 tractor when it starts slipping the rear tires or when I'm using the disc and it starts to bog down. I just engage the 4x4 and it continues like if it had more power. That's why I bought my new tractor this week with a little more horsepower and 4x4. Oh and a cab because I'm tired of getting wet and hate the cold weather.

Were traction or additional braking is needed Four wheel drive/front wheel assist is a advantage. Horsepower is a different question. Modern tractors are normally rated on PTO horsepower not drawbar HP. Except in Nebraska tractor tests. There is to many ways to vary drawbar HP on the same tractor. For example, a 5500lb Deere 5075E will not rate as high as a 7000lb one and even two 7000lb one will not rate the same depending on weight placement, hitch height, tire size, etc. If your activities require the need for addition traction and/or addition braking then fwa or fwd is for you. However USUALLY you loss a little nimbleness in handling. Another thing to consider is the some options are not available without FWA, like power reverser transmissions. Two wheels drives are not antique or outdated. FWA/FWD doesn't keep you from getting stuck they can get you stuck it places that is harder to get out of.
